1999 SMU Women’s Basketball Team To Be Honored Sept. 5
Team won first conference championship in school history.

DALLAS (SMU) – The 1998-99 SMU women’s basketball team will be honored on Saturday at halftime of the Mustangs’ football game against Stephen F. Austin. The team was the first in school history to capture a conference championship, defeating then-No. 4 Colorado State 65-49 in the title game.

In the championship game on March 6, 1999, the Mustangs ran out to a 40-25 halftime lead courtesy of a 13-0 run in the first half, stretching a one-point lead to a 26-12 advantage. SMU kept the pressure on throughout the second 20 minutes of play, not allowing the Rams to get within 13 at any point in the second period. Defensively the team was suffocating, allowing CSU to shoot just 24 percent for the game, including just 6-28 (.214) in the second half.

Individually the Hilltoppers had outstanding achievements during the season, as two members of its team, Karlin Kennedy and Claudia Brassard were named to the All-WAC first-team. Kennedy also earned All-Defensive team honors by the league and was named MVP of the WAC Tournament.

SMU went to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, before falling 68-55. It was just the second time in school history the team had advanced to the round of 32.

In addition to being honored at halftime of the football game on Saturday, there will also be an honorary dinner for the team on Friday at 7 p.m., at Ford Stadium. The Reunion Dinner kicks off at 7, and the program begins at 8 p.m. In addition to honoring the team, the Lettermen's Association will also present its Honorary Letter Awards to two faithful supporters and former SMU cheerleaders. Paul Layne, a diehard fan who has not missed a home or away football game in 37 years, and Richard Ware, Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, SMU Trustee and longtime supporter of SMU Athletics, will be honored this year.

Lettermen interested in purchasing Friday Reunion BBQ tickets should contact Kara Maiella at 214-768-4000.
