From the Fort Worth Star-Telegram editorials & opinions section:
Texas Christian University has secured a place among the nation’s football elite this season and positioned itself for the kind of post-season opportunity unheard of here in decades.
The Horned Frogs go into Saturday’s game against the University of Utah undefeated and sitting at No. 4 in the Bowl Championship Series rankings. A win over the Utes would be a huge step in the Frogs’ march toward their first undefeated season since 1938, when they won the Southwest Conference and national championships.
Frog Fever has gone viral in Fort Worth, so it’s a head-scratcher why Amon G. Carter Stadium, which is relatively small by major college standards, isn’t packed to capacity for home games.
Turns out the Frogs won’t go wanting for fans this weekend when they take their 9-0 record against 8-1 Utah, the defending Mountain West Conference champion and No. 16 in the BCS. The game’s been declared a sell-out, so every one of Amon Carter’s 44,000-plus seats should be occupied.
(Fair warning: To avoid serious traffic jams, find a route other than University Drive south from Interstate 30.)
The noise from the Frog faithful needs to be deafening. The Utes, who finished 13-0 in the 2008 season for a Sugar Bowl berth, will surely aim to improve their post-season prospects for this year.
But TCU no doubt will try to prove that last November’s 13-10 loss in Salt Lake City (before 45,666 fans) taught them how to prepare to win high-pressure, high-stakes, high-hoopla match-ups.
TCU Coach Gary Patterson has rightly warned that no game can be taken for granted and his players must not go into any of them overconfident. Recall that in 2005, the Frogs had high hopes of crashing the BCS barriers, only to be defeated by unranked Southern Methodist University.
Fair or not, there is typically only one spot in the five BCS bowls for a team from a conference that doesn’t have an automatic bid, like the Mountain West.
It’s amazing, even to some football fans who don’t bleed purple, that there’s debate about whether TCU should get invited to the BCS National Championship game should the Frogs finish as one of only two undefeated teams.
But what makes good fodder for sports talk radio isn’t where Patterson’s head is. He and his talented squad must take one game at a time. In fact, they have three left.
First up is Utah. There’s time enough to turn attention to Wyoming and New Mexico, TCU’s final regular-season opponents, after Job One is done.
This winning team has brought acclaim and national attention to its school and hometown. It’s only fitting that Fort Worth return the favor by selling out the biggest game of the season — so far.
And who doesn’t want to see College GameDay’s Lee Corso again in a Horned Frog head?
