Don't understand the fascination with the Hawaii Bowl if Hawaii is not playing, and they would have to defeat both Navy and Wisconsin for that to happen.

Assume for a moment we play Nevada. They draw less fans than us to their home games. How many fans would actually show up? Personally doubt the casual Hawaii fan would attend just to see JJ. To me this would not translate well on TV.

Contrast that to playing South Carolina in Memphis. The Gamecocks average over 70k per home game. That would be the better game, as long as we can keep it competitive.

And who knows...maybe the Liberty Bowl could be our TCU Sun Bowl moment?

exactly SoCal. winning bowl games is nice but not that important outside the bcs champ game, its more about the hype and especially the matchup. Its all about the matchup. JJ returning to hawaii would be nice sideshow, but only if the matchup is interesting to begin with.

Prior to the game, several "experts" had Houston playing Arkansas in the Liberty Bowl. If you substitute SMU in the place of Houston, you'd get a great bowl matchup. I'd love to see an SMU-Arkansas game. If memory serves the last time we played them was in Shereveport at the Independence Bowl. We won 31-9, I was a Freshman that year at the game, tailgating with a keg in the back of a Pathfinder. Post game went to the boats to gamble on a great fake ID, got absolutely plastered and then won $225. I thought it was all the money in the world and we were kings for beating an SEC team.

Now wouldn't us beating an SEC team which would probably draw good ratings and get good attendance be the best case scenario for the program???

Let's take care of business and make it happen.
Here's to those that wish us well and all the rest can go to hell!!!

Folks who are concerned about this might contact your local AD. The fix may soon be in - if it's not already. :)

I'd way rather see SMU-Arkansas, SMU-Auburn than frickin' SMU-Nevada.

The Hawaii Bowl is the only bowl on Xmas eve when many will be at home and partying, so everyone in the nation who wants to watch football will be watching that Hawaii Bowl game.

I doubt if the Liberty Bowl has the same set up. Will the Liberty Bowl be the only Bowl on January 2? There will probably be other BCS Bowls on that day too. So the national audience exposure might not be as promising for SMU PR and recruiting.

If SMU chooses the Liberty over the Hawaii Bowl, it must be due to the boosters and money donations. The SMU AD would be nuts to turn down an extra million dollars to go to the Hawaii Bowl. Unless JJ personally makes up the million dollar difference himself.

I think it is standard coaching contracts to get a bonus for a winning season, CUSA championship, and bowl appearance. Since the Liberty pays more, JJ might get more if SMU goes to the Liberty. But JJ already makes good money. JJ is a player's coach, so maybe the players want to go to the Hawaii Bowl. That would be hard for JJ to give incentitive for the players to win the next two games. That would be suicidal. JJ should be motivating his players to win every game and go to the Liberty Bowl. The past two years were 1-11. What a turn around.

Either way, this is a great season and SMU fans have plenty to be proud of.

Congrats to SMU. Win two more and leave no doubt! The future looks good!!!

I will not make age an issue in this campaign. I'm not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience.

You got to figure financially there are incentives in JJ's contract for wins and Conference Championship....

There are many who observe Christmas by going to church on Christmas Eve. The Hawaii Bowl starts at 7:00 central time.

SMU would get significantly more publicity playing in the Independence Bowl than the Hawaii Bowl - it would mean that SMU was the conference champion and, hence, make a much bigger story.

Correct....SMU in the I-Bowl would be HUGER News than just winning a conference championship...It would mean we have joined either the SEC or Big 12! :D

If we end up playing Idaho in the Hawaii Bowl, we would probably get to see the former radio voice of the Mustangs, Ted Dawson - he now works for the CBS affiliate in Idaho Falls.

man that guy is on a long downward spiral...went to Albuquerque...then he was in Boise, and did the TV for Boise State last time we played up there...and now Idaho Falls, man.

Former SMU TV guy Bill Coats is-or was last I checked-on morning drive on KTBB out in Tyler

ive seen what losing bowl games does for a team, it sends them off in the wrong direction for next season... everyone is a bit lazier, everyone is a bit less positive, and everyone is a bit more negative and insecure about the next season... fans, coaches, players, and recruits... the only people who are happy are the ones who beat you in the bowl game, the back ups who get a starting spot now, and a select few recruits who are good enough to get significant playing time... you win a bowl game and everything instantly looks brighter... atleast you can then say, " yes, we made it to a bowl game for the first time in 25 years and, WE WON!!!"... instead of, "yeah we made it to a bowl game for the first time in 25 years and we LOST, maybe next season..." wow that would be a huge bummer and setback for this teams morale and continuation of this winning attitude that JJ instilled...

I LOVE Ted Dawson-he used to say things like "there are 3 keys to a baseball game. No. 1 Pitching and No. 2 Defense." Still waiting on No. 3 . I LOVE Ted Dawson.
