Nice SMU mention in the Austin American-Statesman

Postby Garret » Mon Nov 16, 2009 1:24 am

Pony power

While TCU makes headlines, the other Metroplex university — SMU — is quietly having its best season in more than two decades. The program that produced greats like Doak Walker, Don Meredith and Eric Dickerson fell into oblivion after the NCAA handed SMU the death penalty in 1987 for paying players and violating numerous rules.

But now the Mustangs (6-4) are all but certain to play in their first bowl game since 1984. SMU is 6-4 overall and leads the West Division of Conference USA with a 5-1 mark. June Jones, the laid-back coach who revived Hawaii, deserves a big raise.

Wonder if they'll report this:

Longhorn football player suspended after DWI
Updated: 11/15/2009 6:01 PM
By: News 8 Austin Staff
A University of Texas at Austin football player has been suspended indefinitely after being arrested early Sunday morning and charged with driving drunk.

Authorities said freshman kick returner D.J. Monroe was pulled over around 1 a.m. Sunday on Interstate-35 near Kyle, because he was driving erratically.

He was then arrested for driving while intoxicated and taken to the Hays County Jail. Monroe was released later Sunday morning, after posting bond.

"We're disappointed anytime one of our players is accused of wrongdoing," UT Head Coach Mack Brown said. "We have talked to D.J. and his family and have decided to suspend him indefinitely, pending the completion of the legal process."

Few details about the circumstances of his arrest have been released.

The arrest was on the AAS right away on the breaking news (before it hit the DMN) and they already have a feature article analyzing how the suspension affects the game plan:
