Since the SEC came onboard the Liberty Bowl 3 years ago, the largest margin of victory has been 8 points. There's no reason we couldn't compete with the 8th place SEC team.

Let me explain, as well as JJ/SMU is doing right now the talent level on smu is avg at best and if you had any other coach you would be fighting to stay off the bottom.. JJ gets the most out of his players and thus the reason why SMU is on top... its the schemes and coaching vs overall better talent but lesser coaching... what JJ offers as a coach is just enough to beat other more talented teams, and he even admits that those teams are more talented... i just dont think the smu has the speed to match up with any bowl eligible sec team, not as well as houston or east carolina can... in a couple years id say SMU will have the talent to tackle a SEC team... just not this year...

I think if we play Nevada or Boise that line will be bigger than Auburn or Ole Miss...

Arkansas is a different story, they would be a 16 pt fav.

Me either. And the next two games after the bowl game are Texas Tech and TCU. So even if we were to get demolished, I would rather the team have a reminder of how hard they need to work in the off season to get to the next level.

maybe but you wont be playing nevada or boise st... boise is going bcs and nevada will probably go to the humanitarian or some other bowl... I call Idaho for the Hawaii Bowl, and SMU can handle idaho.. and even if SMU is favored over a sec team, sec has way more speed and athletic ability from top to bottom...

Idaho will go to the Humanitarian Bowl. It is in their home state and not a destination that is a big draw.

Most likely it will be Fresno. Nevada probably goes to New Mexico.

Boise first has to beat Nevada in Reno and even then may very well be left out of BCS. Idaho will go to the Humanitarian Bowl.

Let me explain... I realize we aren't as talented or fast or athletic as a typical SEC team. But we weren't as talented as the eventual 11-1 TCU team we beat in 2006 either. That doesn't mean we should be afraid to play them. I would much rather see us compete against an Arkansas type team than Fresno St. or Idaho. Maybe since you live out there, the western teams are more appealing to you. They aren't to me. I wouln't care if we lost in the Liberty Bowl. I wouldn't care if we lost in the Hawaii Bowl. I would care if we purposely chose to take on lesser competition.

Right. I keep forgetting about that. Don't you think the WAC will try to get Boise into some other game though? Looks unlikely they will get their Poinsettia Bowl option. If there is an option to set up some other game for Boise that might draw attention, the conference adds some additional bowl revenue and gets all of their bowl eligible teams in a game.

I don't think JJ has any fear about playing the SEC. I do take him at his word about playing in Hawaii. The reasons are many including the national press SMU and he would get. I would also bet the team would rather go to Hawaii. The team deserves to go to whatever bowl they want. If it is Memphis then go there, if it's Hawaii, let them go there. They are the ones that got SMU to this point, along with JJ.

Yes I think ESPN which really controls all this stuff will strong-arm a big game for Boise somewhere somehow if they don't make the BCS. Last year they wheeled and dealed and came up with TCU v. Boise in the Poinsetta Bowl which was not the number 1 option for either the WAC or MWC. I believe it was the highest rated non-BCS Bowl for TV Ratings. These bowls tie-ins are really guidelines and suggestions and ESPN and the Bowls really do whatever they want to put the most appropriate teams in the Bowls they belong.

Sucks for Boise if two years in a row they go undefeated in the regular season and dont make a BCS bowl. Especially when they are the team that made BCS busting famous.
