Great story 81. It's funny you have a girlfriend tie-in. The next day after the Notre Dame game, my girlfriend at the time, (Sort of engaged to be engaged) went with my parents and me to Cancun. The relationship already had a bit of a sinus condition, but I was optimistic. She promptly broke up with me about a week after we returned. Same deal- A couple of years later, she called and I was no longer interested. In 1991, I married my wife and I can too say I outkicked the coverage or ran back a kickoff for a TD with a wooden leg or some such. Two kids and almost 19 years later I can see it was a very happy ending. She puts up with my SMU athletics fixation as well. "Your announcer is Bill Melton."
Re: Where were you on December 29, 1984It's funny, how many of us at the time either didn't have cable or had to make special plans. I certainly don't remember it being HD quality! But it was enough to see Don King, Jeff Atkins and the great Reggie Dupard tear it up.
A little more trivia: I remember Reggie Dupard having a great game as a second teamer against Tulane at Texas Stadium in 82. His New Orleans ties I'm sure added a great deal of incentive. But the next year, I remember a kid from Pittsburg, Texas: A running back named Gary Hashaway who had many carries early that season before Reggie Dupard established himself as the top back and of course Jeff Atkins was right behind. It didn't take long! I think Hashaway was still on the 84 team, but saw little action. "Your announcer is Bill Melton."
Re: Where were you on December 29, 1984I was a sophomore on the soccer team. We watched it at my soccer buddies' condo. As a confirmed ND hater, it was sweet and it preceded a night on the town, most likely Milo's and the Ice House. It was also my Dad's birthday. Don't remember much about his celebration, though. He is still kicking and still is an aggie sports nut. I didn't think for a moment that it would take 25 years before I would see another bowl game.

Actually, Hash saw alot of action in 84, he just moved from tailback to fullback. The Aloha Bowl was actually one of his finer moments, we had put in a new pass play for the fullback that worked very well, he and Coby Morrison both had big gains on that play before Notre Dame caught on to what we were doing.
