If the SEC felt the need to expand, they would invite Texas and Oklahoma long before they would consider the likes of SMU or Houston.

I agree that they would rather have Texas and OU, but they would come with political baggage in the form of A&M and OSU. By bringing in SMU and UofH they get two of the biggest tv markets and recruiting grounds in the country by merely adding two teams. Austin and OKC would never let UT and OU go anywhere without their other big state schools.

SMU and U of H don't bring the Dallas and Houston markets. We have 30k stadiums and can't fill them. No chance that will ever happen. SEC tolerates Vandy as a long time member that at least gives everyone a close to guaranteed win but adds very little to the conference.
