SMU Postgame Notes – December 24, 2009

AWARDS: Kyle Padron named Sheraton Hawaii Bowl MVP for SMU.

SMU BOWL RECORDS

SMU is 5-6-1 all-time in bowl games

35-point margin set the SMU bowl record

45 points tied the SMU record for points in a bowl game (1980 Holiday Bowl vs. BYU; L 46-45)

Had 31 points in the first half, which is an SMU record for points in any half of a bowl game (was 29 in the first half of the 1980 Holiday Bowl)

71-yard pass play from Kyle Padron to Cole Beasley is the longest pass and longest play from scrimmage in SMU bowl history (longest pass was 53 yards, Doak Walker to Paul Page vs. Penn State, 1948 Cotton Bowl) (longest play from scrimmage was 62 yards, Jeff Atkins vs. Alabama, 1983 Sun Bowl)

Shawnbrey McNeal had three rushing TDs, which sets the SMU bowl record of two held by Craig James and Eric Dickerson (1980 Holiday Bowl)

SMU and Kyle Padron set SMU bwol record for passing yards (460) and completions (32). (was 281 yards and 22 completions by Chuck Hixson vs. Oklahoma 1968 Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl). SMU had 303 passing yards in the first half. Padron and SMU also tied the passing TDs record (2) that was from the same game.

Nine receptions and 176 yards receiving by Aldrick Robinson (were 8 and 112 by Jerry LeVias vs. Oklahoma 1968 Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl)

SHERATON HAWAII BOWL RECORDS (since 2002)

Three rushing touchdowns by Shawnbrey McNeal ties the record for rushing TDs and total TDs in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl

71-yard pass play from Kyle Padron to Cole Beasley is the fourth-longest in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl

35-point margin set the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl record

460 yards passing by SMU and Kyle Padron is third in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl

176 yards receiving by Aldrick Robinson is fourth in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl record

Nine receptions by Aldrick Robinson is tied for fifth in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl record


TEAM

The 38-0 and 45-3 leads were SMU’s largest leads this season at any point in a game.

Mustangs go 5-1 in the last six games of the season to finish 8-5. That is the best for SMU since going 10-2 in 1984. That season SMU won the Southwest Conference and the Aloha Bowl (27-20 vs. Notre Dame).

SMU had two 100-yard receivers (Aldrick Robinson 176, Emmanuel Sanders 124) for the first time since the game at Washington State on Sept. 19. (Emmanuel Sanders 178 and Terrance Wilkerson 113)

SMU had four rushing TDs for the first time since have four against Tulsa in 2004

Aldrick Robinson had 176 yards receiving, which is fifth-most in a game in SMU history.

Shawnbrey McNeal had three rushing TDs, which is the first time an SMU player has done so since ShanDerrick Charles had four rushing TDs against UTEP in 2001

Rock Dennis had his fifth interception of the season, which is the most by an SMU player since Shane O’Neill had five in 2001

Matt Szymanski went 46-for-47 on PATs this season (5-5 vs. Nevada), which is an SMU record for attempts and makes in a season

INDIVIDUAL NOTES

Cole Besley - Had a receiving touchdown, which was his third of the season and sixth of his career

Aaron Davis – had his first sack

Rock Dennis - Got his fifth interception of the season , which is the most by an SMU player since Shane O’Neill had five in 2001

Margus Hunt – Had one sack and had 2.5 for the season

Chase Kennemer
- Had nine tackles (all solo) and had 135 for the season; that is the most at SMU since Craig Swann led the Southwest Conference with 167 in 1995.
- Had his first career forced fumble
- Had one tackle for loss and finished the season with 12

Zach Line - Had a rushing TD to finish with seven on the season

Shawnbrey McNeal
- Had 3 rushing TDs and had 12 for the season. That is the most since Ramon Flanigan had 12 in 1994.
- Had 63 yards rushing, giving him 1188 for the season. That ranks seventh in a season at SMU.
- Had three TDs to give him 78 points for the season. That is tied for 12th in a season at SMU.
- Had a career-high seven receptions (53 yards)

Sterling Moore - Tied his season-high with seven tackles

Kyle Padron
- Is 5-1 in starts this season
- Set the SMU record with 460 yards passing
- Set the SMU bowl record with 32 completions
- Had two passing TDs, had 10 for the season (two passing TDs tied the SMU bowl record)
- Had a 188.4 passer rating in the bowl game and his 159.9 season efficiency rating for the season is second SMU (Fred Benners 163.1 in 1949)
- It is his second 300-yard passing game this season (354 at Tulsa).

Aldrick Robinson
- Set SMU bowl records with nine receptions and 176 receiving yards
- Had 176 yards receiving, fifth in a game at SMU; has 800 yard for the season to rank 10th in a season at SMU
- Now has 2013 career receiving yards, which is sixth at SMU.
- Now has 116 career receptions, which is ninth at SMU
- Had his seventh career 100-yard receiving game, which ties for fourth at SMU

Emmanuel Sanders
- Had 124 receiving yards and now has 1339 receiving yards for the season, which extends his SMU record (record was 1,131 by Jerry LeVias in 1968). That is third in a season in Conference USA.
- Had seven receptions and now has 98 on the season to extend his SMU record (previous was Mick Rossley’s with 83 in 1994). That fourth in a season in C-USA history.
- Had a receiving TD, to extend his SMU career record to 34, which is also best in the NCAA among active players
- Had 124 receiving yards to extend his SMU record for career receiving yards to 3791 (second is Emanuel Tolbert, 2784 from 1976-79). He is second in Conference USA history (Jarrett Dillard, Rice, 4138 from 2005-08).
- Had seven receptions extend his SMU record for receptions to 285 (previous mark was Jason Wolf, 235 from 1989-92). He moves into third in Conference USA history.
- Had 152 all-purpose yards (124 receiving, 28 punt return) and now has 4596 for his career; moving into third at SMU (passes Reggie Dupard 4456). He is just the eighth Mustang to 4000 all-purpose yards.
- This is his 16th career 100-yard receiving game, which extends his SMU record and sets the C-USA career record.
- This is his sixth 100-yard game of the season, which ties his SMU record from the 2008 season
- Had 28 punt return yards to finish with 275 for the season, which is fourth in a season at SMU; has 477 for his career which is sixth at SMU

Matt Szymanski
- Made a 22-yard FG and finished 11-of-16 on FGs for the season
- 5-for-5 on PATs; he finishes 46-of-47 on the season, which sets SMU record for makes and attempts in a season

Taylor Thompson - Had a sack and had 5.5 for the season
