UH will announce $6.8 million contract for Sumlin

The University of Houston will announce this morning that football coach Kevin Sumlin has signed a new six-year contract.

UH has called an 11 a.m. news conference to announce that Sumlin has signed a deal worth $6.8 million — plus a deferred compensation package worth at least $1 million. The new deal would make Sumlin, who is 18-9 in two seasons at UH, the third-highest-paid coach in Conference USA behind SMU’s June Jones (estimated $2 million) and UCF’s George O’Leary ($1.15 million). East Carolina’s Skip Holtz had a deal that paid him $1.16 million before he left for USF last week.

The Chronicle reported on Thursday night that Sumlin and athletic director Mack Rhoades had agreed to terms, pending approval of the UH board of regents.

Rhoades approached Sumlin during the middle of a 2009 season in which UH climbed to as high as No. 12 in the national rankings about a new contract.
