He also worked as assistant recruiting coordinator at S.M.U. from 1997-99 until being hired by Saban.

Re: Derek Dooley new Tennessee CoachI'm not entirely sure-Dooley was brought in by Cavan and I think he was only about 24 at the time. But if he did come in with Cavan in his first year SMU did have a significant uptick in recruiting the first 2 years until it was discovered that several players had their SATs taken for them by a stand-in arranged by an SMU assistant named Malin who was promptly fired. Yea come to think of it we did get a Texas Top 20(Parade All-American) and I believe at least 2-3 Texas Top 100 (Jack Brewer and Corlin Donalson) and about 3-4 highly recruited kids that were probably rated higher than even those in this class. Oh yeah we got that Karon Riley kid from Michigan who transferred back to Mini-Soda with Jack Brewer and both competed for All Big 10. Desmond Jones was pretty darn good and started as a Freshman but I think flunked out or got homesick. The 2010 Class doesn't have any Texas Top 100s. But overall the majority of those classes even in Cavan's early years weren't really that great in comparison to other SWC schools-more competitive maybe and we just missed on another Parade All-American from Lewisville who I think was Brewer's cousin. I would say we were starting to make in-roads under difficult conditions until the Malin incident.

Re: Derek Dooley new Tennessee CoachThere was a lot of talk then that Cavan hired Derek Dooley as a favor to his (Cavan's) former coach, Vince Dooley (Derek's dad, or uncle, or something).
I don't know how good a WRs coach he was at the time, though. Just don't remember.
Re: Derek Dooley new Tennessee CoachI was playing at SMU when Dooley was there and I remember not thinking much of him as a coach. He was a great recruiter, the whole southern charm thing, and had some great sayings in practice! He also helped run the special teams one season. I remember hearing the same thing about his postion being granted because of who his daddy was. I was very surprised when I saw that Tenn had hired him. ... VERY surprised.
Sports, and all that implies.
Re: Derek Dooley new Tennessee CoachPretty sure that Dooley knew what was going on with Malin and Marcus Mosley et al. He should fit in just fine at Tennessee with an entire team full of Marcus Mosleys.

Re: Derek Dooley new Tennessee CoachHe's 41 now.
He finished law school at UVA, passed the bar and practiced law for a couple years. Decided he wanted to coach and somehow got some help from Cavan. He would have been 28 or 29 then.
