http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=neumann/100323_tim_brown_interview&sportCat=nflTim Brown in an interview with ESPN's Thomas Neumann If you hadn't chosen to attend Notre Dame, where would you have gone to school? Probably, unfortunately, it would've been SMU. It would've been the home choice. [Brown is a Dallas native.] Everybody else was really cheating so bad, and SMU was probably the top dog as far as cheating, but it was right there at home. Being a mama's boy -- like I still am -- it would've been very enticing to just stay there. It's a very good school academically, also, so it wouldn't have been the worst place to get a degree from. But I'm glad things worked out the way they did, simply because the Heisman and graduating from Notre Dame is one thing. But really, being away from home and having to deal with that situation and man up -- when you want to go home and you absolutely can't, and you just have to find a way to deal with it -- I think really taught me more than I could ever learn being at home.

I saw him say pretty much the same thing in a TV interview, but it was more that his mom forbade him to sign with SMU, and insisted on Notre Dame. She was skeeved out by the coaches recruiting him, and said, "you don't want to be a part of that." Turned out to be good advice for him, although he didn't really benefit till Lou Holtz got there his sophomore yr

I believe that.
Love how he doesn't even acknowledge that Notre Dame might have cheated even a little bit.
I really shouldn't drink and type.

Some of the old timers, like myself, will recall that Tim wrecked a rather expensive car while still an undergrad. This was while ND was playing up the Hesiman angle of Tim coming from abject poverty to ND to get what they considered a top flight academic institution. Right.

Yeah and I'm sure that his Mom bought him that long mink coat that he sported back in his ND under graduate days.
