I don't understand Rutgers either. The best explanation is that apparently under their cable contract they get X number of dollars for each state they enter. I would take Maryland over Rutgers

I don't see why the Big Ten would want them, either. I would think Syracuse would bring more of the NYC market than them.

I would look at Virginia Tech before Maryland. I lived in Baltimore for awhile. No one there cares about Maryland football--and that was the year they were supposedly good.

But there are a lot of people in NJ and it fits their academic profile. Plus, any Big East team likely goes in a division with Penn St., Ohio St., and Michigan. I don't think they are looking to add anyone who could be a threat from the east. (not that Maryland would be)

Also, they must know something we don't about what they could get out of NYC. Maybe they can marginally increase their subscription rate there with Rutgers. If they are even able to charge $.25 or $.30 instead of $.10--in NYC that adds a lot of money. Probably far more than Maryland delivers with DC. I think this is why UCONN keeps getting thrown out there too.

Rutgers is 30 miles from NYC, 60 miles from Philly, 100 miles from Atlantic City (gambling, shows, restaurants, and ocean). You can take a train from all these places and more to get to Rutgers. All their games are a sell out and not enough tickets for all their students. It is the State University of NJ with a large and influential Alumni.

If I was an alumnus from the Big Ten, I would want to play Rutgers and for the next few days would have one heck of a lot to do. No other division 1 football team has a bigger market so close to their campus. Good academic reputation, 9th oldest college in the US and played the first football game in 1869 (so a lot of tradition).

Fordham and Columbia both play D-1, albeit in the FCS.

I think when you add NY, NJ, and Philly you probably get past LA in population. Although Philly has one FBS school, Temple which plays in the MAC and never sells out. Villanova is FCS and never sells out either. So, I am not sure you can attribute the Philly market to Rutgers. I agree about Maryland, they don't sell out except when Clemson or VT visits. They play Navy at a neutral site. VT has a bigger following but not as big in the DC market. The teams with the biggest followings in the mid-Atlantic region are: Delaware, VT, and Navy. All three travel very well.

I posted that information earlier in this thread. The TV contracts (not just cable, but Dish and DirecTV also) result in the Big 10 Network getting 88 cents per subscriber in states that have a Big 10 team and 8 cents per subscriber in states that do not have a Big 10 team. After expansion those numbers will probably increase to around $1.00 and $0.10.

Are you even a sports fan? The Big 10 is an Athletic Conference. How successful is the Rutgers Athletic department? They've sucked at every sport for 150 years. Here is a novel thought - a football conference should try to get good football teams. All the talk about conference expansion has centered on markets & televisions. No one is talking about the sports. And when your teams suck, then your product sucks. College football is being terribly shortsighted about conference realignment.

And by the way, you obviously never been to Atlantic City, because it is the sweaty butt-hole of America. The Scroti is located next to a sphincter, but that doesn't make it a tourist destination.

Don't be logical here.

Big Televen can't even figure out their name or count

much less give a hoot about anything but the almighty $$$$ they see by grabbing the NY TV cable market.

The logical athletic add would be Pitt but PA's cable TV market is already covered with Penn State.

Big Televen is disgusting!

I had a friend who went to Princeton and he said that if America needed an enema, NJ is where they'd stick it.
