And who says Peruna is a pushover!!! #1 to Peruna!!!

"Going Rogue: College Football's Greatest Renegade Mascots"

Peruna is an absolute killer. Literally.

While maybe looking puny due to being a Shetland pony, according to the SMU Daily Campus, Peruna is the only mascot in history to ever kill its counterpart from another school...

BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

I don't see any PDA moments for our "good boys" unless they are with each other. Peruna is one bad Pony.

Serious question, not trying to be a jerk. I see that bleacher report quotes the DC about Peruna killing the Ram , and I recall that when I read it in the DC last year it basically sounded like a regurgitation of Peruna's entry on wikipedia. I have never seen an article that was written at the time of the incident, so I am wondering if anyone here is old enough to remember/confirm that it happened or has a link to an original source about it or about any of Peruna's other exploits.

The ram event occurred in I think 1935. That would mean that the players would have been born in 1917 or earlier. So if there are any 93 year olds who were at the game, you can weigh in. I believe this incident would be in the DC archives from 1935 or probably in the NY Times archives. That was also the game where we beat the Seven Blocks of Granite (including one guy named Vincent Lombardi). It was waayy before my time. There were apparently pictures of Peruna coming to town and pictures of him riding in the NY Cab which got him so riled up. At least I vaguely remember seeing them somewhere. I did personally witness the time Peruna ran through the middle of the Rice band, and when he left a big steaming gift on the new TCU astroturf, and a friend witnessed him scaring the Baylor Bear.

It would have had to have been 34, 36, or 41. I know that Peruna had his own cab to the game, etc.

Unfortunately, I also witnessed Peruna, after being kidnapped by TAMU in 1964, be returned immediately before the game with shaved mane and tail and under sedatives causing him to lie down and sleep the entire game in the corner of the Cotton Bowl.

Wasn't that also the time when the Aggies at first would not give him back and someone reminded them that horse theiving was still a capital offense in Texas.

I believe you are correct. In fact, kidnapping all the mascotts in the SWC was a big problem that year. As I recall TAMU may have captured Bevo and BBQed him before the Thanksgiving game. At least that was the legend at the time. Something also happened to a Rice Owl and Baylor had a bear that went missing and hurt a captor. I vaguely recall all mascots being targeted and cannot remember the details; however, no one attempted to grab the razorback of Arkansas which was housed in a steel cage in some park in Fayetteville. He was too mean to even handle and even when they took him to games he remained in a heavily barred steel cage. The DMN carried an article detailing all of the events toward the end of the football season. I think the league really clamped down on the mascot problem after that year and things returned to normal.
