For all you defenders of the DMN's coverage of the hometown SMU Mustangs:
The continuing Sunday features on the DMN's 125th anniversary year looked back today at great sports moments in Dallas from 1910-35. The SWC is highlighted, with a focus on the 1935 SMU-TCU game for all the marbles and a trip to the Rose Bowl.
SMU won this game - and THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP - yet:
*the featured photos are of TCU's Sammy Baugh and Davey O'Brien, with a caption that O'Brien won the '38 Heisman. (Sort of out of the subject era, no?)
*And there's no mention of SMU being awarded the national championship that year. None. And where were photos of that hometown SMU team?? Or of SMU's Bobby Wilson, who made the catch that beat TCU late?? Or perhaps a quote from 90-something-year-old Maco Stewart, who played on the '35 Mustangs and lives down the road in Corsicana??
Kevin Sherrington wrote the piece and editor Bob Yates approved it. This is total BS and they should hear about it. It's ridiculously insulting to SMU. I encourage everyone who shares my concern to call 214-977-8444, AND e-mail [email protected], [email protected], editor Bob Mong at [email protected] and the sports editor at [email protected].
Nothing will change unless we speak up. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram would NEVER do this to TCU -even when the Frogs were 1-10!
(No, I wasn't at the '35 game. I'm 54. I'm Rick Atkinson. And I approved this message.)
