Another slap in the face

Postby mr. pony » Sun Jun 13, 2010 9:05 am

(I realize there are bigger fish to fry at the moment, but this deserves mention.)

For all you defenders of the DMN's coverage of the hometown SMU Mustangs:

The continuing Sunday features on the DMN's 125th anniversary year looked back today at great sports moments in Dallas from 1910-35. The SWC is highlighted, with a focus on the 1935 SMU-TCU game for all the marbles and a trip to the Rose Bowl.

SMU won this game - and THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP - yet:
*the featured photos are of TCU's Sammy Baugh and Davey O'Brien, with a caption that O'Brien won the '38 Heisman. (Sort of out of the subject era, no?)
*And there's no mention of SMU being awarded the national championship that year. None. And where were photos of that hometown SMU team?? Or of SMU's Bobby Wilson, who made the catch that beat TCU late?? Or perhaps a quote from 90-something-year-old Maco Stewart, who played on the '35 Mustangs and lives down the road in Corsicana??

Kevin Sherrington wrote the piece and editor Bob Yates approved it. This is total BS and they should hear about it. It's ridiculously insulting to SMU. I encourage everyone who shares my concern to call 214-977-8444, AND e-mail [email protected], [email protected], editor Bob Mong at [email protected] and the sports editor at [email protected].

Nothing will change unless we speak up. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram would NEVER do this to TCU -even when the Frogs were 1-10!

(No, I wasn't at the '35 game. I'm 54. I'm Rick Atkinson. And I approved this message.)

I agree as I read it and wondered why it read so TCUish. It was a one way slanted article that is ridiculous.

already did.

Sirs:

I was at once excited and ultimately disappointed to see your article featuring one of the "great moments in Dallas sports," specifically the SMU-TCU game of 1935. Upon reading the article, I had to doublecheck the url to make sure that I wasnt reading an article at the Ft Worth Star-Telegram. While SMU won the game, and ultimately the national championship that season, there is NO mention of the national championship, and the photos feature Davey O'Brien and reference the Heisman trophy he would win three years later.

While I understand that the DMN fancies itself as a de facto northern bureau of the Austin American-Statesman and enjoys featuring Bevo-related news, slighting SMU in an article about one of the greatest years in Mustang history to me is a stretch even for the Dallas Morning News. It would be akin to the Chicago Tribune writing an article about Northwestern's 1995-96 Rose Bowl season, and featuring a picture of the Notre Dame game that year, won by Northwestern, and having the caption detail the career accomplishments of Lou Holtz.

For more details on the 1935 season and perhaps learn some of the SMU related information that perhaps you simply werent aware of (why else would there be no mention of a National Championship), I would direct you to this article: http://smumustangs.cstv.com/sports/m-fo ... ts-06.html.

Sincerely,

Thank you for bringing another insult to SMU by the DMN to our attention. If this doesn't shut up the Bevo, sorry, Belo, apologists for once and for all nothing will.
