Tuberville - Big 12 will fold

Many from outside the conference have expressed this sentiment, but it is a bit surprising to see a coach publicly admit as much: Texas Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville believes the Big 12 is still doomed. I agree. There are just too many issues with the money imbalance and inevitably schools are going to -- like Nebraska -- grow tired of the power Texas has. Once one more goes, I think that's it. Anyone can paint any picture of penalties or contractual agreements or anything else, but holding the league together at 10 is merely a temporary measure. Be it a year, five or 10, the Big 12 will eventually evaporate

Except that Tech needs Texas, Texas doesn't need Tech. Tech was not looking down the abyss like Baylor, Missouri, Kansas, Iowa State or K State (because Texas invited them along). If they had, Tuberville would have kept his yap shut. Does Tech have that much power in the legislature? If not, UT will happily shed themselves of the Sand Aggies when it suits their purpose. If UT wanted to, it could assemble a conference of stiffs who are happy to get whatever crums UT drops on the floor.

Tuberville may be right but don't blame UT for the demise. Texas envy does not explain how the realignments came about. The Big 10 and Pac 10 intiated the moves. OU and A&M may have options but none of the other schools do; and the Aggies and Sooners have allied with the Horns. The Big 12 coaches prefer not having a conference title game, so having less than 12 members may actually be bonding for the schools. Of course there will eventually be other changes but not ones you can predict as of now.

Anyone that has remotely followed this year's expansion realizes that it is entirely about Texas. The PAC-10 intended to go to 16 in an attempt to gain Texas. Nebraska left the Big 12 so as to no longer be pushed around by Texas. A&M and OU were only going to join the SEC if Texas joined the Pac-10. The Big 12 remains at 10 because of Texas.

Whatever happens, it will be because Texas wills it, or in reaction to what Texas does. Thinking otherwise is simply ignoring what should be obvious.

As I said, Tech ain't getting any better offers. If they want to come and join CUSA, we'll make room for them, but guess what, they'll make less money in CUSA even if they got all of it.

Poor Tommy got reprimanded by the big12/10 for his remarks. I bet he is really upset.

Amen and Amen. Texas and a handful of their big state school bretheren, (Ohio State, Alabama, Michigan, Penns State) are emblematic of what is wrong with college football in that they drive the sport and they, partly because of $5 million per year coaches, are driven by money. Texas has been particularly successful playing the game. They got SMU and Houston out of their conference (teams that in the 80s were out-recruiting them) and worked big revenue sharing deals. They rarely play a meaningful non-conference game away from home, and very few non-conference games outside Austin or the state ofTexas. They are evil.
