All this "recruiting restrictions" talkas the MAJOR reason for our continued downward spiral is really just one big excuse. I know I won't change many minds on here becuase so many of you are so entrenched with your theories, that your ego won't let you see otherwise. Guys, we ain't playn' Texas, we ain't getting the living cra% beaten out of us by Tennessee / Micigan / Ou or even Mizzou, for crying out loud. We are absolutely getting THUMPED, out played, out coached, and flat out "out manned", week in and week out by some of the WORST TEAMS IN D-I!! Even with "Cavan's class" or all these "kids", we can't even the least bit "hang" with LaTech????? Sounds like excuses to me, sounds to me like the fork is so far into this program that most on here don't even realize how OVER this thing is. We are done. So what to do? Drop football? Ego, $$$$, more ego, tradition, would never let that happen, even though it is probably the best "business decision". Compete at a lower level? Proabably makes the most sense, but, ego, $$$, etc. would never let us "stoop" to SWTSU, NTSU, La-Monroe's, etc., level, or lower. So, we will continue, because I don't see it changing, to wallow, lose, grip, bit$h, moan about our sorry fball program....sounds like fun. Negative? No, freaking realistic, folks. :hmm:
Re: All this "recruiting restrictions" talkyeah, dude. SMU football is just friggin cursed. Hell, there is no hope for SMU. You can't come back from the death penalty. Hell, it was a metaphorical plane crash. Oh wait, Marshall came back from that. I guess what I am saying is that there is nothing that cannot be overcome. I guess what I am saying is "STFU troll"
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Re: All this "recruiting restrictions" talkSMU can compete successfully at this "mid major" level and I firmly believe we will, but obviously it can't come soon enough for too many people. I don't see next year being much better than this year, unless of course our Frosh and Sophs can beat Rice, Tulsa, UTEP & SJSU's Juniors and Seniors. I look for us to win 2-3 games next year and most will consider that "improvement" now that we have been conditioned for that. We siply don't have the horses to compete with OSU, TTech & TCU which means a poor start. We won't likely compete with established programs like Boise, Fresno & Hawaii, so our opportunities are limited until our talent significantly improves.
It appears to me we have been recruiting guys who are marginal I-A players whose only options have been SMU or Rice or Tulsa or La-Laffy, etc... A lot of our guys could have been studs at very competitive I-AA programs but chose SMU for the opportunity to compete at the "highest" level...not to mention getting a scholarship to SMU. Cavan may have been a good coach, but he didn't have the Texas connections he needed to recruit well and SMU has been down so long the program itself doesn't attract anyone's attention. The biggest drop-off between the Rossley and Cavan eras has been the deterioration of our play in the trenches. Bennett inherited a squad that doesn't even go 2-deep on the OL & DL. You won't compete with anyone in I-A without the horses up front. As Bennett said when he came in here, he likes his chances of signing quality players if he can just get them to visit our campus. His connections with Texas H.S. coaches is making a difference. Coach Ringo's connections are also helping. Ford Stadium and our finally having the ability to run football camps is definitely helping. The key will be whether Bennett can sell EVERYONE on the level of patience it's going to take before we can compete at TCU's current level. This year is a complete bust and the program has lost yet another QB prospect in Bartel...but realistically Phillips and Meeks are our QBs of the future. I like what Bennett was able to do in his 1st full year in terms of beefing up the OL & DL. Unfortunately, he's having to play too many of those guys this year before they are really ready. No excuses. We are clearly one of the worst, if not THE worst program playing I-A football. Unless these guys surprise me, we may be among the worst again next year. My expectation is that by the time these current Frosh and RS Frosh reach their 3rd year in the program (2005 season), we will be a LOT more competitive. I really don't think CUSA is going to be disappointed by SMU.
Re: All this "recruiting restrictions" talkWhile you're stooping and looking down at North Texas, don't forget to look up at your TV to watch them take on one of your most recent new conference's top teams in the nationally televised NEW ORLEANS BOWL, December 16'th.
When will some of your elect finally understand that your perceptions about UNT are a bit outdated? You were very perceptive to add ULM to your collegiate "cooties" list so I guess that means you kept up with who the Mean Green were playing today, eh? :hmm: [/QB][/QUOTE] [ 11-08-2003, 06:03 PM: Message edited by: MeanGreenGem ]
Re: All this "recruiting restrictions" talkHey HH-why don't you just admit you wouldn't know your [deleted] from your head when it comes to recruiting. You refer to "Cavan's classes" -the senior and junior classes were two of the worst we've had post DP. And Louisiana Tech-they out recruit us just about every year with their misfit collection of JCs, partial and non-qualifiers. Heck Max Emfinger even had their class ranked number 26th in the country last year which I think was inflated but they are getting all the partials and non-qualifiers in talent rich Louisiana who can't get into LSU and aren't recruited by Tulane. Its one thing to have an opinion but when you start spouting off about topics you demonstrate you know nothing about I'm going to call an [deleted] an [deleted].

Re: All this "recruiting restrictions" talk...this [deleted] an [deleted] talk...from the same guy who never changed his bed sheets his entire Freshman year, now I've heard everything, you are amazing Scallion. Some things NEVER change...

Re: All this "recruiting restrictions" talkStallion, you're misinformed. Louisiana Tech is not "getting all the partials and non-qualifiers in talent rich Louisiana".
LA Tech signed 2 partial qualifiers in 2003 (just as LSU did). They are RB Kermit Givens and LB Bryon Young. WR Kentrell Gransberry went to a JuCo instead of LA Tech and everybody else in the class is a full academic qualifier. In 2003 LA Tech also signed Parade All-American kicker Zach Myatt from College Station, TX. Myatt wanted to kick & play baseball in college, but he couldn't do that where he wanted to play- SMU. In September two "N. Louisiana boys" transferred home from Big12 programs. Former Parade All-American QB Brent Rawls transferred to LA Tech from Oklahoma and 6'-7" 360 OT Jemayel Phillips transferred from Nebraska. Both of these guys are full academic qualifiers. Good luck to SMU.
Re: All this "recruiting restrictions" talkLATech -
Congratulations to the Bulldogs. Maybe SMU and LT will be conference-mates again.
Re: All this "recruiting restrictions" talkyou have 17 Junior college players-and plenty of partial qualifiers too which you conveniently failed to mention.

Re: All this "recruiting restrictions" talkYou specifically mentioned last year's recruiting class, so that's what I responded to. LA Tech has 12 JuCos on the team; 2 are off the team (1 quit, 1 booted). If you believe that JuCos & partial qualifiers are the answer to SMU's future, more power to ya. LA Tech is getting away from that much more quickly than you think. My apologies to the other SMU fans for engaging in a "[deleted] match" on your board. Just won't let inaccurate inuendo like Stallion's go unchecked regarding my school.
Re: All this "recruiting restrictions" talkI checked before you posted and you have 17 JUCOs on your roster. You admit non-qualifiers-where there is non-qualifiers there are substantial partial qualifiers-I follow this stuff pretty close-you going to deny it or what.

I know for a fact the name of some of your partial qualifiers that you didn't name but I think I'll just let you hang yourself with your comments.

Re: All this "recruiting restrictions" talk
Thank you for 7 more years of suck, followed by the admin working to dismantle us when we finally do something right. "I think Couchem is right."

Re: All this "recruiting restrictions" talkBTW it should be pointed out the same kids that I was speaking about a decade ago who were partial qualifiers VERY POSSIBLY could be a FULL QUALIFIER today. Why? Because there used to be a 700 SAT minimum. Now the importance of the SAT has been deemphazized and there is now NO MINIMUM.
Its the point I'm trying to get some of you to understand and at least consider before you lynch Turner. Should SMU admit kids who score well below a 700 SAT-how about Recruit A 3.2 GPA 540 SAT or Recruit B 3.0 620 SAT? Both used to be partial qualifiers-today they are full qualifiers I'm getting a kick out of all the old Cheerleaders that now want to burn down the school when we might be talking about the exact same profile under different NCAA Rules in 2000 and 2010. I'd like to know the profile of the qualifiers who were denied admission before I lighted the torch. I understand a lot of people who parrott anything June Jones says but admissions at SMU is about 10 times better than in 2000 and about 5 times better than in 2003. I mean come on there could be as much as 400-450 point differences between the SAT standard under Pye and the NCAA SAT standards under Turner now. SMU should have known when it hired June Jones that he has always been the type of Coach who pushed the margins in admissions. This is a very frustrating debate because there is very little perspective or rational discussion of the profile of the students denied admissions- "With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris
