Speaking of ticket prices (Slightly related to SMU)

Postby mrydel » Thu Aug 12, 2010 8:35 pm

There is the beginning of a mutiny or perhaps mass suicide in Arkansas because they have initiated a minimum fee for retaining a persons season tickets. (See SMU earlier this year.)

Whereas we in 104 were required a minimum donation of $1,000 to retain our seats, UA is requiring their 50 yard line (coincidentally also 104) to contribute a minimum of $300. I guess greater attendance has its benefits. The scale goes down to $50 dollars for the lesser seats.

Now before I go further, I have not seen the complete layout of the program, and it would not surprise me if the $300 was per game, or per ticket since I heard someone say it was going to cost them $5,000 to keep their tickets, but that is not the way I read it this morning.

But is was interesting to listen to A.D. Jeff Long explaining how it was necessary to do this even in this economy in order to keep up with the other schools. It was almost word for word what I heard for our A.D.

I am curious as to whether it was better for SMU to announce it early and let it die down or do like Arkansas and announce now, just before the season starts to offset the sting with the anxiousness of the new season.

If the donation amount continues to rise, I'm going to suggest that I get to take my bleacher seat home with me, so I can feel it's worth it.

Good info. It's probably per ticket.

$1,000 is pretty stout for an initial fee but my carpool mate pays $2,000 for 15 yd line second deck for four tickets at UT. That also gives rights to the OU game and bowl game.

I'm surprised it took Arkansas so long to do that. LSU put in place a mandatory Tiger Athletic Foundation contribution, even for non-TAF members, about four years ago.

If you want to get on the 50 at TCU it requires a $5000.00 donation not $1000.00

UCF lowered its donation levels to the GKC after loosing about 5000 fans...

That is what surprised me more than anything. Tickets to the UA games are major items in wills and divorce settlements. They could probably charge a lot more and get away with it, but I think the UA fans have reached a point of demanding a competitive product rather than just a team they can rally around.

Good to be back. When I signed up for Ponyfans in Sept. 2000, I was running Coogfans and wanted publicity. :-)

$5K on the 50 at TCU?!? It must be just for those sitting on the 50, thin purple line up the 50. But really $5K? For four tickets?

Urban schools like UCF, UH, Memphis have to tread carefully with these seat licenses. Adding a special section with chair backs is one thing. Jacking up current seat rates is another.

Off topic, while Padron, defense and receivers are solid, I'm really wondering about the RB situation. That was a key part of the R&S success. Keep the defense off guard a little bit.
