Bottom line: Jones, the former Hawaii coach, has proven his all-out-passing style works on the mainland, too. Resurrecting SMU's program should have gotten him more votes as national coach of the year. Last year the Mustangs did have the advantage of sneaking up on people. That's gone now. On the plus side, the Ponies dodge C-USA East heavies Central Florida and Southern Miss.
Padron triggers the potent attack. As a freshman out of the Southlake Carroll High School QB factory, he completed 67 percent of his passes and had a school-record 460 yards in the Hawaii Bowl. SMU will score plenty of points. Any improvement in the record this season must come from the leaky defense, which at least has three linebackers returning.
