SMU was the lone school willing to take a chance on Kyle Padron, who was never able to compile the résumé many have come to expect of a Dragons quarterback because of a broken right hand five games into his senior season.
That risk has definitely been worth the reward for the Mustangs as the 6-foot-4, 217-pound sophomore continues to help re-establish credibility to a program that was handed the death penalty by the NCAA in 1987.

Padron proceeded to go 5-1 as the starter and posted a 159.9 passer rating to rank fifth in the nation. He also helped SMU to the biggest turnaround in the nation, going from back-to-back 1-11 seasons to 8-5.
The final victory was a 45-10 rout of Nevada in the Hawaii Bowl, where Padron earned MVP honors after passing for a school-record 460 yards and two touchdowns. It was the Mustangs' first bowl game in 25 years.
