Someday Before I die.....I hope to see a great game between two highly ranked or at least regarded rivals in SMU and TCU. Has anybody ever thought about this. SMU and TCU have rarely been strong if ever at the same time. One school is ALWAYS dominate of the other or both teams are struggling. There have been 10 SMU/Baylor games more procative and compelling than the best SMU/TCU game. For example, I can't hear "That Good Ole Baylor Line" and not think of the devastation of a heartbreaking loss or the exhiliration of a great victory. When I think of SMU/TCU I can't think of a truly classic game-although TCU gave SMU all it wanted on a couple of games in the 1980s. In fact, the one time that SMU/TCU both came into this game with a full head of steam was in 1985 when Jim Wacker and Kenneth Davis were turning the Frogs around. The Game was spotlighted on National TV and what happens-on the Friday before the game the roof falls in on the TCU program and TCU suspends most of their best players and SMU goes on to rout TCU 56-21. This rivalry is jinxed. Too bad because that would do a lot to bring some excitement back to the Metroplex College Football picture.
What about 1997 when we beat you 21-18?
How about 1996? when you guys beat us 10-6 in the cotton bowl. Back in 1993, there was a pretty good one at night where SMU won. Used a fake punt to go up on us. There've been some good ones historically as well. 1935 of course, and 1947? where we tied 19-19. Now lately, they've been lopsided, but that's only because TCU has had success unlike any in the past 50 years.
I think it would be real cool to have SMU and TCU meet in some future Ft. Worth Bowl as representatives of the MWC and CUSA. Now if that didn't get the metroplex college football blood flowing then nothing short of Texas and Texas A$M playing a game on the grassy knoll would.
I have a buddy who is hardcore SMU and he is always saying that BU-SMU is a much better rivalry than SMU-TCU. The Bears and Ponies did have some epic battles in the late 70s thru the mid 80s.
On a chat this week, the BU AD said that he wanted to extend the series with SMU. Hope it happens.
Starting next year you delusional Baptist kids will get to play the Frogs. Please be advised that we are not Samford and SMU.
well I guess that leaves it up to Copeland to finalize the series with Baylor. Do you want near capacity crowds with great college atmosphere or do we want to play the Seven Sisters of the Southland Conference before friends, families and neighbors.
Great post Stallion and you are absolutely correct about this series. One team always seems to be way up and the other way down.
I don't know if Sic Em is referring to me or not, but if I had to pick one permanent OOC rival it would be Baylor. Far, far more memorable games and a whole lot more friend and family connections make that game more desirable at least for me. I'll make the drive down to Ford tonight. In years past I would reluctantly attend TCU games because it was an obvious win and rarely exciting. For the last several years it has been nothing but a major disappointment. Obviously, TCU has made the changes necessary to compete at the highest level. At SMU, we still wait for a true commitment. Go Ponies </cautious optimism>
Re: Someday Before I die.....I was just poking around looking for examples of the difference between tomorrow's game and that of 2005 when I found this gem from Stallion.
It truly looks like we're almost there. -CoS

Re: Someday Before I die.....our intention should not be spoiled by the eight worldly preoccupations: gain or loss, pleasure or pain, praise or cirticism, and fame or infamy.
Dalai Lama not a football fan is my guess.

Re:
bbbbbut that would mean tcu didn't win the MWC! course it would also mean we weren't in Memphis at the Liberty Bowl...let me think...Memphis or Ft. Worth...Memphis or Ft. Worth... I keed, I keed, WF...hope the rivalry revamps into something more meaningful and special than it already is, and has been. stable-boy for the four horsemen of the apocalypse
