the problem is they don't know the football schedule for next year when making the decision, also 2011-12 is already set.

That I don't know. Bottom line is that the faculty elects these people to set the calendar and then the calendar is set a year in advance, so if the school were to change it because of a football game at the last moment, you'd have some pretty p***** off facuty members.

There never seems to be a right time to schedule a SMU fball game. Students are a few hundred to around a thousand?

It's either too early, too late, TX/OU weekend, yada yada.
Hopefully we keep winning and the priority will be coming to games.

A top-level SMU official told me that indeed, our bylaws (or whatever governing decree we have adopted) have long required our academic calendar to be set in stone a year in advance (for planning/budgeting/etc). Once it is set, all we can do is wait for C-USA to release the football schedule at a much later date (usually in late spring of the upcoming season). We do make requests to C-Usa and inform them that we have fall break and would prefer not to play a home game on that weekend. However, they get the same requests from others and it is just the luck of the draw. The main point is that no one at SMU has any control over this.

Football comes first...always

One day, students will stick around for the sole purpose of a home football game that weekend. Just not yet

Correct.

Exactly. We request every single year to have CUSA schedule an away game for Red River Shootout. We can't whine about Fall Break too...that's asking CUSA to specifically give us a special schedule for 1/2 of our away games every single year. Ain't gonna happen...half the time the conference tells us to go pound sand and schedules a game for the Shootout anyways.

Have we ever thought about moving Fall Break (a year in advance) to OU weekend? We would only have a single request for October. I am probably wrong, but maybe they know a year ahead when this game is scheduled.

That the football schedule comes out so late also wreaks havoc with trying to plan Family Weekend and Homecoming every year, too.
Don't worry. Be Happy. Or not.

Thanks for all the information. But, it looks like the break is for the faculty, not the students. I should come back as a professor, let's see Cox has no classes on Friday, full professors only teach two classes, four weeks off at Christmas, five days in the fall, four days at Thanksgiving, a week in the spring and 13 weeks in the summer, it would be hard to keep up of when I would actually work.

I was a Lecturer in the Finc Dept at A&M for about 10 years. That was the easiest job I ever had. I can't imagine it being any more difficult for those who don't have to worry about being rehired every year.
