Add to that, SMU has encouraged a lot of teams to go for it on 4th down.
SMU is one 4th down attempt below three teams tied for most attempts against. SMU has 16 4th down attempts against.
edit: only 6 of those attempts have been successful.

It seems like the bulk of those 4th down attempts came from the Tulsa and TCU game.
