FORT WORTH – TCU coach Gary Patterson attempted Thursday to put to rest a controversy that arose earlier this week.
On Monday, an American Medical News report online detailed an incident during a Sept. 24 game in which Horned Frogs running back Ed Wesley suffered a concussion.
Television cameras for ESPN , which was televising that game at SMU, caught Patterson berating team physician Dr. Sam Haraldson on the sideline for concluding that Wesley had a concussion and could not return to the game.
Haraldson told the Web site in the report that he "was verbally accosted by the coach, screaming at me insanely at the top of his lungs that he doesn't think [Wesley] has a concussion and what right do I have to hold him out."
Patterson tried to clear the air Thursday.
"At no point was Ed ever in any danger of going in because we took his helmet," Patterson said. "He didn't play [the rest of] that ballgame. He passed all the tests so he played the next week [at Colorado State]."
Patterson and Haraldson blamed poor sideline communication for the incident, and Haraldson said in a statement Wednesday that the two had spoken and apologized.
"Communication was a problem," said Patterson, adding that he was unaware Wesley had failed a concussion test or been knocked unconscious. "I don't have a relationship problem with Dr. Haraldson.
"For 10 years we've tried to grow kids up, never put kids in harm's way," he said. "Do we push kids? Yes. I'm intense, it's well-documented."
A source at TCU said that Haraldson had previously complained to the school about Patterson and other incidents, but no action was taken.
According to several sources, Wesley was knocked unconscious for a few seconds in the second quarter. By the time Patterson made it out on the field to check on Wesley, the team's leading rusher told the coach he felt fine.
This guy has an excuse for everything. Why does he come out and say I messed up, my fault, the story would probably be over.
