Penalties

Postby GeorgiaMustang » Sat Nov 06, 2010 11:24 pm

The number of penalties is absurd! Most of them are not a small false start penalty. They seem to be playing by junkyard rules. Wake the F**** up! All of the penalties killed us.

The coaches have no control. If we play a clean game, we are right there. The coaches need to make every player responsible run until they puke.
Those who complain about a problem are simply wasting time they could use to fix it.

Potential is nothing, performance is everything.

I don't know if this is a coaching issue. To me, it looked like players showing their youth and inexperience. I agree with your idea to make them run — not the way they wanted to spend their bye week, I'm sure.

our sophomores have now played 23 college games. They are essentially juniors. Spare me the youth and inexperience talk. Discipline is discipline.

Agree with rgv. Kyle has played a lot of games. Beachum and Tennison have played a lot of games. There clearly aren't consequences for personal fouls.

Agreed. And it's not like we are playing the cream of the crop in terms of defenses. Here is a recap:

Tech 98th ranked defense
UAB 95
Wazzu 116
TCU 1 (the oddball on this list)
Rice 108
Tulsa 81
Navy 29
Houston 82
Tulane 96
UTEP 50

With the exception of TCU, Rice and Navy, we have scored fewer points than each of those teams gives up on average every week, and by nearly a full 6 points. Our offense is simply bad, and the penalties make it worse.

that is where i have a problem with the relaxed atmosphere, it is no different with the cowboys. you cannot give an opponent 100 yards in penalties, it is just unacceptable. i know they want the players to play for them but the personal foul penalties have gotten out of control. june needs to make each and everyone of them run and maybe those who commited the penalties should run a little extra. i would expect this staff to have more control over their team

looked like our team lost composure-right about the time our coach did tonite. We were right in this game until June lost it.

It may be satisfying to the fan to watch him spend timeouts to absolutely tear into the pathetic officiating crew, but I would much rather have him calm the team down, get them to execute on offense, win the game, and then we can write him another check to cover his warranted post-game comments.

Really, honest question, what is berating an officiating crew like that going to do during the game except for giving the players something to focus on? Make the refs grow more brain cells?

It's not just the number of penalties either. Yesterday and against Navy we got personal fouls at critical times which killed comebacks. We will not be a consistent winner unless June does something about discipline and composure.

Many have commented that the team wasn't played "inspired" or motivated football. The calls that were made early in the game were killers, and as is typical when playing in El Paso, could be seen as suspect. (I don't want to hear about how they were good calls - we're talking about player perception)

Perhaps June was letting the refs have it to try to fire up the team, much like how a basketball coach will get himself ejected to try to fire up the team.

watching the Tivo this evening - wow, these penalties are maddening. SMU has been doing this all year long. 15 yarders - crazy --- more penalty yards than good things in the 1st half.

He would probably have to run up to the press box. I think Morrison is up there.

I know this is a crazy thought, but anyone think that JD dominated the first several games of the season and has been frustrated by not being able to play as aggressively because we pulled the defense back with no corners? He shouldn't be committing the penalties, but that has nothing to do with coaching.

And the biggest penalty in the UTEP game was the clip, performed by an Olineman who hadn't played all season. That isn't coaching either. That is a young player.

Youth plus no true senior leadership means mistakes.
