PonyFans.com caught up with several players who sat out part or all of Tuesday's practice with an assortment of bumps and bruises:
• DL Szymon Czerniak was walking around the field Tuesday with a protective boot on his right foot, and said he has a sprained ankle and knee. "I was engaged (with a UTEP offensive lineman) and someone rolled up into it," Czerniak said. "But I hope to be ready for Marshall." Czerniak said he didn't know exactly when he would be clearer to return to the practice field.
• RB/KR Darryl Fields didn't play against UTEP after straining a groin in SMU's win over Tulane. He said he got his legs crossed while getting tackled, and strained it when he was pulled to the ground. Fields also said he hopes to be back in time to face Marshall.
• RT J.T. Brooks left the UTEP game with a concussion. He said he took a shot to the head late in the second quarter when he tried to cut-block a Miner defender. "When I got up, I didn't remember how it happened," Brooks said. "I watched it on film later and saw it then. But when it happened, I got back to the sideline and thought the game was about to start. That's when they said I was done for the day." Brooks said he hopes to return to practice soon.
• RB Zach Line left the UTEP game in the third quarter when he took a defender's helmet to the thigh, and said Tuesday that his leg is swollen below the point of impact from where the blood flowed into the leg, although he said there isn't any major bruising. "The bye week couldn't come at a better time," Line said. "I've never been hit in the legs so hard it knocked the air out of me, but that's what happened. I tried to work it out on the sideline — I had it wrapped up, but I had a little gimp in my step."
• WR Chayse Joubert is recuperating after tearing his left anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in practice a few weeks ago. Joubert underwent surgery to repair the ligament. He was moving around pretty well, and said the knee is not exceptionally painful, but he is unsure when he will be cleared to resume running.
