Ex-A&M coach helped revive Bobcats in '90s

Texas State apparently will take a look at Dennis Franchione in its search for the program's next football coach, people close to the athletic department said.

Franchione, a former head coach at Alabama and Texas A&M, is expected to listen to the overtures for his possible return to San Marcos.

Texas State athletic director Larry Teis declined comment, claiming that the job had been posted only since Tuesday.

"No candidates at this time," Teis wrote in an e-mail.

The job came open Nov. 22 when Brad Wright was fired after four years.

Texas State, moving up to the Football Bowl Subdivision over the next two seasons, needs an established coach to help it make the transition to the Western Athletic Conference in an expanded Bobcat Stadium in 2012.

Franchione came to San Marcos in 1990 and turned around a program that had suffered five straight losing seasons. After posting a 13-9 record in two years at the school known then as Southwest Texas State, Franchione moved up to the major college level, embarking on a career that took him to New Mexico, TCU, Alabama and A&M.

Franchione, 59, is 187-101-2 in 25 years

He has been living at Horseshoe Bay, where he has a home and playing a lot of golf. He probably would be a good choice at Southwest State Teacher's College, where my mother and father met and where LBJ went to school.
