DMN Editorial: 'Pony Excess' is a sad, sordid tale....

Postby dcpony » Fri Dec 03, 2010 4:35 pm

of SMU football's 'death penalty'

I attended the theater premier last night of ESPN's new documentary, Pony Excess, which will be shown on the sports network next week immediately after it concludes coverage of the Heisman Trophy announcement. Having been out of the country and completely disengaged with the U.S. sports scene in the early to mid-1980s, I only knew snippets about the SMU football scandal that led to imposition of the NCAA's infamous "death penalty."

Review was from someone paid to go see the movie. He does not understand Texas and football.

Love the film and feel even better about where we are now.

Review seems to portray it was only smu/Dallas....the documentary I saw seemed crystal clear that it was everyone in swc and nation........ Just smu/Dallas made sure they got what they wanted.

I have to agree, this guy really missed the point fof the film and gave a poor summary of what it contained.

idk, about y'all but the mention of JFK's assassination wasn't a reach, it was an essential part of setting the contextual foundation of the Dallas areas psyche and attitudes.

Review read exactly like you think it would, coming from a guy who lived abroad most of his life and doesn't know much of anything about college fb.
But in his own way-too-serious way, he endorsed the film.

I thought the JFK thing was a good lead in. It suggested that if you asked anyone about Dallas, all they would be able to come up with is "that's where JFK was assasinated". Dallas then became known for football with the uprising of the Cowboys, and all that led in to show just how big a part football became of the area.

Agree 100%. That unfortunate day was what Dallas was known for from 1963 until about 1975 or so when the Cowboys and CBS Sports gave the nation another reason to know Dallas.

The guy doesnt really get it but you have to give him a little credit for trying.

Have to admit watching the show last night with the Kennedy assassination starting things off wondered why this was relevant and where this would lead. It did all make perfect sense and works but in the same right is a stretch. Comparing a city/football/psyche to a murdered president just doesn't feel right.

I can see that, too, but remember, it's not really comparing football, etc. to a murdered president. It's simply showing that the city was struggling to have an identity other than where that murder happened. The fact that it's such a sensitive issue nearly 50 years later really shows just how bad that image tainted this city.
