Whoever this guy was was loading up to go for 432.5.
I used to lift weights back in 82-83 but this is WAY more that I could budge.
Go Mustangs

Big PushWhile I was waiting for the Spirit shop to open I went downstairs and watched through the glass at some footballers lifting weights. I saw them load up the bar with 4 of those BIG weights on each side and this bald ( shaved ) white guy got under and pushed it up. WHOA that bar was flexing. I opened the door and asked.. How much was that... 425 on the bench. They are doing testing this week and so far today, we have had three guys bench 425.

WOW. Who was it?
According to PonyFans.com's strength and conditioning feature, there were nine guys who could bench 400: Richuel Massey, Don Ieremia-Stansbury, Brandon Bonds, Derron Brown, Clay Glockzin, Foy Munlin, Derek Swofford, Bryan Turner and Melvin Williams. Based on your description, I'm assuming the guy you saw was Glockzin or Swofford (I didn't realize he was that strong!) Unless it was one of the other guys who was close to 400 when that story was written. Thanks for the report!
Re:
Think of where we'd be if we didn't have strong backs who could take a hit. Oops, I guess we couldn't be worse than winless. And to think they can bench that much without studying kinesiology first....
I do not know the bar weight but I also some things on the side that looked like weight saftey screw on things.
Yes, 405 is not bad but I trust the 425 that Faucette told me. And, this guy was not a RB. He was 6-4 to 6-6 and pretty lean and built. Like to have 10 more!! ![]() Mustang Militia: Fight the good fight"
I talked to Coach Faucette early this morning, he said he expected twelve or thirteen to bench over 400lbs. Including all of the starting o-line, he said the summer was very productive.
I'd like to think that more 300lb-ers could more easily bench 400 than 5-6.
There's not much excuse but lack of desire to better yourself for more of them not to. Hopefully, going from last year's crew of 3 or 4 to this year's 13 or 14 that can says something about the team's internal desire to better themselves (or the fact that these guys are simply better than last year's). Either way, going from 3/4 to 13/14 should also mean a lot of 'almost' 400lb benchers as well.
Re:
Ha -- remember when he and Adami signed, and people were wondering about the two scrawny DLs from south Texas? (I think they were both in the 220 range.) Got to love how hard those two have worked to get strong. Genetics don't do it -- the strength Clay and Allan now have is a result of incredibly hard work. Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
Re:[quote="RGV Pony"]4 plates on either side would be 405.
The weight room does not have conventional weights like back in the day a plate is not 45lbs. All the plates are in kilograms and the largest one is up to 55lbs. so 8 plates at 55lbs and a bar at 45 would be exactly 425. By looking on the sidelines the only bald white guy is #35 Derek Swafford. What a haus.
