DALLAS – Maybe it was because he’d been slighted in the past. Or maybe Aldrick Robinson was just speaking his mind. But Robinson was all smiles and even more proud of his biggest honor so far this season.

At the conclusion of the regular season, Robinson, a senior receiver for SMU, was named to the Conference USA all-conference first team after leading the league in yards per game and touchdowns. The Waxahachie native didn’t shy away from how much the honor meant to him.

“I felt like I deserved it. It was a good season and I did good against conference teams and I’m glad that they noticed that,” Robinson said.

In 2008 Robinson became the first receiver in two decades to have 1,000 yards receiving. That season he posted 1,047 yards and 11 touchdowns. Still, he was bypassed for an all-conference honors and relegated to honorable mention. Last year, he had 800 yards on 47 catches with five touchdowns.

This time, he would leave no doubt where he belonged.

Robinson finished the regular season and conference championship game with 60 grabs for 1,225 yards and 13 scores. The catches (10th), yards (2nd) and touchdowns (1st) all register on the SMU single season record books.

Along the way, Robinson grabbed some national attention making the Biletnikoff semifinalist list as one of the 10 best receivers in the country. His 1,225 yards this season rank seventh nationally and his 13 touchdowns rank fourth. Robinson’s 60 catches make him the receiver to reach 1,000 yards in the fewest catches. Currently, he is riding a streak of seven straight games with a touchdown reception, the longest such streak in program history.

Robinson joined four other Mustang players on the first team list, the most for the school since 1984. On offense were left tackle Kevin Beachum, Jr and running back Zach Line. The defense put up Ja’Gared Davis and Taylor Thompson. Another 11 players made either second team or honorable metion

The former Indian has a chance to continue rewriting the history books at SMU as the Mustangs are preparing for a Dec. 30 bowl game against Army in the Armed Forces Bowl in Dallas. The game will be played at SMU’s home stadium of Gerald J. Ford Stadium. Normally the game is played at TCU’s Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth but offseason renovations forced the game to be moved.

Robinson was thrilled to finally earn the first team honor. It’s just another mark in the record book he’s already come close to rewriting.

“It’s a great accolade to put on my success that I had at SMU,” Robinson said.
