Who will be the big draw in CUSA?

Postby Charleston Pony » Tue Aug 10, 2004 7:08 pm

Which CUSA team is likely to draw the biggest crowd to Ford in 2005 and beyond? If Houston or UTEP become strong teams, I would expect both to draw very well...perhaps in the 25k range. I see Rice, Tulane and Tulsa as right around 20k. Not sure any of the eastern teams will travel enough to make a difference, so I'm guessing USM and Marshall, because of their consistently good programs, should draw 20k plus. Of course, I'm assuming SMU will field a competitive team and will be capable of generating high teens to 20k on our own, regardless of the opponent.

Anybody foresee a CUSA game selling out Ford? I think the only chance of that would be if SMU was hosting the CUSA championship game.

If we start winning we'll have no problem bringing in a good size crowd

I seriously doubt that ANY Conference USA team will draw well (more than 2,000 fans) with the possible exception of UTEP or UH in a strong year. It is all up to SMU as far as attendance in this league.

I agree pretty much with Stallion. Memphis and Tulane might bring crowds if they are on a big run, but otherwise, on an average year 2000 is about it. UTEP/UH will be the biggest draws in Dallas in CUSA. This of course is an improvement over the current WAC in that UH is a good trade for La. Tech. And Boise, Nevada, SJS, Hawaii, and Fresno never brought 2000 fans to Dallas, ever. That being said, I don't expect ECU, UCF, UAB to bring many crowds. As storied as Marshall has been recently, I don't expect them to bring much of anyone either. If we get 2000 from any of those 4 teams I would be very pleased.
