I agree with those who say Bennett will get his full 5 yrs to produce...but I also agree with those who say another winless season is going to test Copeland's patience.

The better question might be: "what would it take for Bennett to earn a contract extension"? Or, did Copeland learn his lesson when Cavan's contract was extended after SMU's only winning season in the post death penalty era? I say if Bennett can win 4 games this year, Copeland would be wise to offer a 5 yr rolling contract extension. If Bennett revives this program and Fran doesn't turn things around quickly in College Station, it will be tough to keep Coach Bennett in Dallas.

These are good points. I will say this--even through 0-12 I never got the impression his team quit on him on the field, unlike his predecessor. Off field stuff is a different story, but they played [deleted] Saturday, albiet they weren't good enough to get the W last year.

Coach Bennett may have a rough start early this year and we will hear from all the "doomsayers" early on, but I believe he will rally the team and finish up with a few strong wins. This new offensive guru should really help Coach Bennett concentrate on defense. I would say he must win two games to be completely safe and hopefully we can win even more. It would be great if we could "play above our heads" a few times and pull off an upset or two. Bennett if given time will turn this thing around because the man can recruit!

Bennett must produce in 4th year

Postby Sam I Am » Wed Aug 11, 2004 8:47 pm

Coach Bennett has a free ride this year regardless of his record. But next year will be decisive since it will be the fourth year of his contract. There will be enormous pressure to either extend his contract for recruiting purposes or to let him go. When Bennet recruits for the 2006 season, the players will want to know if he is going to stay at SMU. Only a contact extension would reassure them about his tenure. So I repeat, Bennett's future will not be acted upon until after the 2005 season. After our first year in the C-USA, his team needs to have 5 wins or more to stay longer. Check it out.
