They're boozin' in Boise!

Postby KnuckleStang » Fri Aug 13, 2004 11:48 am

Apparently Boise St. is set to start selling beer at home games. This will obviously never happen at SMU, but I wonder how big an effect this will have on their attendance (or their finances when they start getting sued by DWI victims)?

"Bronco Athletic Director Gene Bleymaier said earlier that the sales would only be allowed in a secured section north of the stadium. The tents would be sold to businesses and corporations. They would not be open to the general public, and those entering the tents must be invited guests."

So basically they now have the same situation that we do with the Suites and the Club Level. I know it will probably never happen, but I wish that SMU could sell beer to the general population at games, it's a part of every other sporting event in this country. It would boost attendance (especially for the students who are of age) and increase revenue (5 bucks a beer, you could charge whatever you want, people would pay). Our two bigest problems are money and attendance so selling beer seems like a cure-all. At the very least if we have a repeat of last year, it would make the games a little easier to swallow.

No, our two biggest problems are winning some games and not turning the ball over!

NCAA Rules

Postby Boston Pony » Fri Aug 13, 2004 1:31 pm

I believe NCAA rules restrict public sales of beverages. Anyone have specific info? I remember that LSU and Tulane didn't sell them years ago and if they don't in LA, they don't pretty much anywhere

I was in the Superdome that day and the only thing that got me by was many gin and tonics from the hard liquor kiosk on the concourse.

It may be a State law. I vaguely remember when we played at the Cotton Bowl, there was no liquor sold inside the stadium during SMU games with UT, UH, TT, and A&M, but you could buy beer on the Fairgrounds. But when we played Baylor, Rice, TCU or Arkansas, I vaguely remember them selling it inside the Cotton Bowl. Certainly it was sold inside the Cotton Bowl during Cowboys games.

I went to a San Jose-SMU game a few years ago and, as I remember, they sold beer but limited you to two. The way they kept trsck was by a hospital type wrist band on which they marked your purchase. My reaction was, "If you're gonna limit me to two, why bother!"
