RGV, I would love to recruit two or more folks to the Mustang Club, but as others have expressed, it can be tough. I've even had two friends who have stopped giving, and have given up season tickets. They got to the point where they felt "enough is enough. They just plain had enough of losing, and playing poorly. I don't blame them, but I was very saddened. I know one other friend who is not going to last much longer. He has been a member and season ticket holder since football returned. His patience is wearing thin.
I think that the administration needs to understan how they are underselling the school. These folks have begun to walk away from SMU, which for them was also very hard, but they have become very discouraged.
Damone mentions that many kids come to SMU as fans of schools where they grew up or even ut/a$m. I remember some of this even back when I was at SMU, but the difference was that most then had enough pride and interest to become SMU fans. This was always a question I had to folks. I grew up in LA, but liked SMU, and became diehard as a student and alumni. Why shouldn't any other student? If you are here, support your school. Get involved. Become a fan. If someone loved ut or penn state or some other school, why did they come to SMU? I'll tell you why. SMU for the most part offers a way better education on the undergrad level than most schools, even a ut (or in my experience a ucla.) It has a good tradition, why ignore it? Anyone who come to SMU an doesn't give it a chance is a cheeseball in my book. I went to almost every home game while I was at SMU, and many away games. Really, there is no excuse not to. It was a part of what made my college experience great.
In the meantime, SMU needs to back its programs. Help Bennett and Tubbs win, and make SMU seem like it is a place of excitement.

well said - norcal -
i agree - the 'mustang club' members will return when the winning starts but most of all - a REAL BACKING BY THE ADMINISTRATION AT ALL LEVELS!!!
they (we) are tired of throwing good money down a deep black hole & then get blamed for not supporting the school - hey - i'm included in that list as well - once i back-pay my membership from last year b/c of financial problems this yr - i will either reduce my membership level or decline all together! i'm fed up as well!
for starters the eggheads need to get out of their warm little fuzzy protected environment of the university system (government bureaucrats included) & realize real-world of competition as what it is & quite blaming the alums for THEIR FAILURES!!!
THEY CREATED THIS ENVIRONMENT OF 'LOSING' BUT THEY REFUSE TO ACCEPT ITS RESPONSILBILITY!!!
if & when they do - smu will again become a WINNER at the national level - & that includes going after the bcs-bs with the other non-bcs schools!!!!!!!!!!

I'd really like to hear what Bennett saw/heard/dealt with at K-State when they were getting the thing turned around up there. I can't imagine an environment that would've been more conducive to apathy and disinterest than what was going on at K-State pre-Snyder and shortly after he showed up. I know one ingredient they brought was w's...but until they got the w's, what did they do? When KSU brought 40000 strong to the Cotton Bowl vs. BYU at the beginning of the turnaround, had all of those folks been off the bandwagon, then suddenly came back on?
I really think we can learn from what Bennett gleaned from Snyder.

good thoughts. I was an out of state kid too. Grew up a huge Illinois fan, I mean diehard. And if Illinois met SMU today in any sport, I'm all Mustangs, no question about it. I understand having a soft spot for another team, but I dont understand how if you are a sports fan at all how you could not support your own school. If you are ashamed of your school, you're either weak minded or just plain weak. I could add some other superlatives and adjectives about the alum we all know, but I won't.

The Beach Boys said it all in their song, "Be True to Your School"
When some loud braggart tries to put me down
And says his school is great
I tell him right away
"now what's the matter buddy
Ain't you heard of my school
It's number one in the state"
So be true to your school now
Just like you would to your girl or guy
Be true to your school now
And let your colors fly
Be true to your school
I got a letterman's sweater
With a letter in front
I got for footbal and track
I'm proud to where it now
When i cruise around
The other parts of the town
I got a decal in back
So be true to your school now
Just like you would to your girl or guy
Be true to your school now
And let your colors fly
Be true to your school
On friday we'll be jacked up on the football game
And i'll be ready to fight
We're gonna smash 'em now
My girl will be working on her pom-poms now
And she'll be yelling tonight
So be true to your school now
Just like you would to your girl or guy
Be true to your school now
And let your colors fly
Be true to your school
Rah rah rah be true to your school
Rah rah rah be true to your school
Rah rah rah be true to your school
Rah rah rah be true to your school

Thanks, 1965, for the lyrics. They're great.
My question for those who can't take it any longer (remember, we have yet to play a game this year), what is the option? Be true to your school isn't a choice but part of one's DNA. Expect to win, demand 110% and support the team.

Since TT isn't bringing their band, perhaps the Mustang Band can play "Be True To Your School" a few times on Sept 4th?

How about it, Mustang Sally? Can the Mustang Band put this in its playlist?
