Sonny Cumbie Gets Call-Johnson Expected To RedshirtTech named 5th year senior Sonny Cumbie as its starter against SMU over JUCO All-American Robert Johnson who Tech Coaches have been attempting to persuade to red-shirt this year so he can learn Leach's offense.
Re:
We'll see if you still feel that way about 9:30 p.m. Sept. 4. Here's a little snippet from one of yesterday's practice reports about Cumbie:
Re:
Okay, my bad. I thought that was a shot at Cumbie. Johnson is kinda at a crossroads now. He's not happy about being redshirted, and it remains to be seen whether he makes the best of it and applies himself to learning the offense and becoming more consistent. If he doesn't, there are three other QBs on the roster that could beat him out next spring. Personally, I hope he does redshirt, get the offense down cold, and then we'd see what a truly athletic, mobile QB brings to this offense.
I agree that Johnson's athleticism makes him scary, based on the reports I've seen. But remember, there were a lot of folks out there last year (myself included) who thought Tech would take a big step back after Kingsbury graduated. All that Symons kid did was go out and set an NCAA record for the most passing yards in history. Yikes.
I'll reserve judgement until after I see the opener. What this does tell us, however, is that Coach Leach is one hell of a teacher.
If you start with a pool of QB candidates of the caliber Tech can recruit, then maybe you're right. But I wouldn't go so far as to suggest that any QB can run the offense. The guys they've had (Kliff K, Symons) are very talented guys. I just hope this Cumbie kid isn't in their league (or at least not yet - after getting shocked in the opener, I hope he helps Tech run the table.) Personally, I agree that Coach Leach must be a great teacher. I think his scheme is a little gimmicky, but the results speak for themselves.
