Offensive Coordinator Interns With Green Bay Packers

Mean Green Offensive Coordinator Ramon Flanigan took advantage of a unique opportunity over the summer, interning with the Green Bay Packers as a part of the NFL’s Minority Coaching Fellowship Program from July 25 to August 8.



Flanigan attended the Packers training camp held in Green Bay, Wis., where he worked on the staff of the Packers along side long-time Green Bay receivers coach Ray Sherman.



In charge of many of the same duties he has here at North Texas, Flanigan supervised workouts, broke down game film and evaluated some of the NFL’s most talented receivers, such as Donald Driver, Javon Walker and Robert Ferguson.



Flanigan said that while the approach to the game is different at the professional level, the internship showed him that North Texas is at the forefront when it comes to coaching.



“It was a great experience for me to be a part of,” Flanigan said. “It really reaffirmed the way we do things here at North Texas. Our guys come out of this program well coached.”



The Minority Coaching Fellowship Program was introduced by the NFL in 1987 in an effort to bring more minority coaches to the league. Cincinnati Bengals Head Coach Marvin Lewis and New York Jets Head Coach Herman Edward were both participants in the program.



Flanigan, the youngest coordinator in Division I-A, is entering his sixth season at North Texas. Under his leadership senior quarterback Scott Hall has thrown for over 4,000 yards and is on pace to be in the top five of every major career passing category in school history.



While playing for Southern Methodist University, Flanigan led the Mustangs to their first winning season in 11 years while finishing his career as the schools all-time leader in total offense.

I didn't realize Flanigan was the NCAA's youngest coordinator - that's a hell of feather for his cap!

Was he recruited by Coach Rossley? That had to be a nice reunion up there for those two. Good luck Ramon.

Yes, Ramon was recruited by Rossley. He's come a long ways offensively since his days as Offensive Coordinator of the Soul Sistas Intramural team.

I remember watching him play center field for Wichita Falls Rider. I never thought that skinny little toothpick had an athletic future ahead of him.

Definitely. I imagine he wouldn't make that move except to be coordinator or head coach, so it will be a while. But I've always heard he really loves SMU, and it would be great to see him back home.

Anyone know if he's considered a strong recruiter?

He recruited all-everything Brandon Kennedy who SMU was also recruiting. I believe he signs more guys at UNT than any other coach.
