How is Romo ahead of Eckert?

Postby rich_alum » Thu Aug 26, 2004 3:40 pm

Not sure I understand this.

Eckert has a cannon and looked very good in the spring game. If Phillips goes down for some reason, (and I hope he doesn't) I will be disappointed to see Romo ahead of Eckert.

Any reasons why Eckert is now 3rd string?

Because ROMO outplayed him in the last 2-3 week. ROMO prob took more time to get up to speed.

Also, in a young team with a new offense, a running QB is probably going to help you "NOT lose" or, more accurately, to "NOT make as MANY mistakes" early.

Even if all else was even Romo should be the choice as the rest of the offense would run basically the same plays. If Ekert dominated in the spring then maybe it would make sense to design the offense around his arm but with a young OL give me a running QB. And Romo is left-handed like Phillips.

Romo had a quite respectable resume in JC too.

Also, keep in mind:

1) with our OL being so young, our QB may need to be mobile. That helps Romo out. Not only can he run the same plays, but he has a survivability factor.

2) Eckert was strong in the spring game. But that was a spread against a 4-3 playing a soft mixed zone-man. He may be hanving more difficulty with reads against nickel defenses and not having completely wide open players to throw to.

quite frankly both performed poorly in the last scrimmage-the decision must have been made based on other fall practices. After Saturday Nite I hope neither gets on the field and we have one QB for the first time in about 7 or 8 years. Wasn't Flannigan's Sophmore year-hell that's been 10 years since we had a stable QB position.

It still kills me that Cavan tried to bench Flanigan. Say what you want in Cavan's defense, Stallion, but that was not his most lucid moment.

I hear Romo may not be all that intimidating judging by arm strength, speed etc. but someone told me he just knows how to win some how, some way.

Not too long ago, OU fans couldn't believe that Josh Heupel, who didn't have enough arm to knock down a cardboard box, would be a QB that could win a National Championship.

Romo may not be a Heupel, but he sounds like a similar player.

I've heard the same thing about Eckert - "knows how to win."
Who knows how many of these comments are accurate, but I'm liking what I'm hearing.
