Not a problem facing SMU...and its a good thing too. This would price me right out of the game:
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/2004-08-24-tickets-cover_x.htm Actually, as a non-season-ticket holder, this probably wouldn't affect me much at all, come to think of it.
Once SMU fields a quality product, M-Club membership will become a bigger factor for anyone who wants a good seat at Ford. Plenty of people complained about their new seat assignments in Ford compared with the Cotton Bowl. Some of that was based on capacity alone, but I think 2000 was the year the "point system" was introduced, if memory serves. I doubt we will ever compare with anyone on that list, but those who want to sit between the 30's may someday need to join the Mustang Club to do so. That's where all of this is headed, assuming we choose to continue competing at the "highest level".
Interesting thought....
Right now, SMU requires donation to the Mustang Club in order to get better seats. What if we gave people the option of either 1) donating more money to the Mustang Club or 2) smaller donation to the Mustang Club but they have to buy season tickets for basketball as well. That way we increase attendance for both revenue producing sports?
the current points system rewards donors to the M-Club and those who purchase both football and bball season tickets
Unfortunately, we don't have a "driver" program. For instance,KU requires that students who want basketball tickets must by an all-sports ticket. I hope our sports point program rewards those who buy all sports ith the best seats instead of allocating seats only on a individual sports program. Does anyone know if that is true?
First, there is no excuse why anyone on this board is not a Mustang Club member. Minimum donation is $50. At most Division 1 schools, to be part of the "booster club" requires a substantially higher donation. Join the club and earn the right to complain about our lack of success. Second, there is no reason why any DFW alum or friend of SMU that posts on this board is not a season ticket holder (this should probably be extended to Houston, Austin, and San Antonio too because it's not too hard to get to Dallas). Again, the tickets are cheap relative to other Division 1 schools and even if you don't intend to go to all of the games, buying tickets and giving them to friends, relatives, employees who will attend the games helps the school. Consider it a donation to your alma mater. This second point is especially true with the new 15,000 actual attendence rquirement. We've got a great stadium and game day on the Boulevard (while 15 years late) is a great new tradition.
Bottom line, we've hit rock bottom. That makes supporting the team difficult because no one likes going to games and watching their team lose every week. However, now is the time that the school and football program need us the most. Support the Mustang Club and buy tickets to games when it's cheap and easy to do, so we can begin the climb back to respectability.
Re:
I'm in the club of people who paid 8 years worth of tuition to get two degrees from SMU, AND who spent two years of that time WITH NO FOOTBALL TEAM. I think I've earned the right to complain about whatever I want.
Re:
I think that you can complain, sure But I certainly hope you aren't one of those alums that thinks that "they paid their share" to SMU (due to its higher tuition costs). Because, that is simply a bunch of bunk. The question is, now, what are you doing to help the situation? Not paying for games, or using freebie ticket handouts, does nothing, as does not helping alleviate the financial condition for the Athletic Department (which MClub donations do). I think that is the main point.
I do not have season tickets and I do not belong to the Mustang Club, but I attend every home game and purchase tickets at the box office to do so. That is money. And most importantly, my butt will be one of the ones counted as being in the stadium on gameday.
As I remember, jt brings friends with him most of the time to the games, so I have no complaints with him not buying season tickets...but hopfully the day will come (nothing personal here) when he wishes he had started building that history of support when it becomes a criteria for getting a good seat or any seat for that matter, because it will mean we are back.
Good point on future ticket priority.
JT, I'm glad you attend the games, but I still believe lack of season tickets and Mustang Club donation by you is indefensible. If you are a fan and support the team as it appears you do, why not commit to season tickets and give directly to the athletic program? What's the rationale?
Re:
The rationale on season tickets is there is no absolutely no monetary difference in the "indefensible" way I do it and the way you would have me do it, so I'll waive the defenses. As for the Mustang Club, I was in it once so I could get upgraded seating at Ford and I thought my seats sucked and I did not like the way the old codgers who never went to games got the best seats, so I dropped the Mustang Club and now I use their seats instead of worrying about whether they are going to go unused. I am a fan and support the team through my attendance, and frankly, as poorly as they've given back to the fans since the DP I think they should be glad about that.
