CALDWELL FLORES: Making his preferred choice

Postby PonyPride » Tue Feb 08, 2011 5:19 pm

For the first time since he took over as head coach of the SMU football team, June Jones's annual announcement of the high school players planning to join the Mustangs in the fall included the name of one non-scholarship athlete: Caldwell Flores.

Flores visited with PonyFans.com to explain his initial connection to SMU, where he originally committed to play and why he switched his pledge to SMU.

Enjoy!

Sounds like a great addition. What advantages does a preferred walk-on get?

Good story — kudos to PF.com for catching up with him.
Welcome to SMU, Caldwell!

I believe that a preferred walk-on gets to participate in summer workouts and in the late summer practices before school starts whereas regular walk-ons must wait until school starts before they can participate in practices.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Unless something has changed in the last few years, this only means he gets to join camp and 2-a-days before schools starts.

You are probably right. I was trying to remember from way back when, when I had a nephew offered to be a preferred walk-on. Unfortunately high school algebra did him in and he didn't get to take advantage of the offer.

Right about the practice participation as NCAA has limits on those who participate in two-a-days and after school begins. Also leaves the impression to a kid that he is "so close" to being a scholarship player. Very important to have good players as walkons to provide depth to scout teams to give a '"good picture". Big difference between a walkon at SMU and other private schools with $50,000 coast involved compared to the public universities like North Texas, Texas State, Texas, TT and A&M with their inexpensive tuitions and room and board.
