TCU shows vulnerability

Postby The PonyGrad » Fri Sep 03, 2004 10:20 am

While their offense churned yards their defense coughed them up, especially to a mobile QB and a spread offense. sounds interesting. 8)

The only won because NW could not hit a FG to save their lives.

I also was surprised at how NW was able to move the ball, although to be fair, NW's QB is pretty damn good, and they have a huge and deep line. And I'd never heard of that RB before, but he looked good -- Munlin-esque, even!

TCU's defense wasn't what it normally is, but they weren't exactly playing a team with no offense.

Whether NW's QB is good or not I do not know but they stated several times that he only complete 3TD passes while playing all last season (and 4 in the game vs. TCU.)

NW, a Big Ten bottom feeder, had over 420 yards passing last night. In Ft. Worth.

9/18 is going to be oh so sweet.

I can see why Tech would be licking their chops over those passing stats. You keep looking ahead, OK?

Besides, SMU first vs. TCU.

Poor NW kicker, maybe they should call Trent Stephenson, never even had to worry about his kicks being close.

I enjoy watching TCU because they have good talent and always play to the level of their competition. It makes for a lot of entertaining games...

I would imagine that the Frogger fingernails in the stands are gone after each game.

while I understand it is a little unfair because Tech replaced 8-9 defensive starters last year, Tech didn't exactly stop many offenses last year either. TCU v. Tech could be a 53-52 game too. But in the long run I think Tech will improve enough on defense this year to win that game especially in Lubbock. As for TCU I count at least 7 offensive threats better than our BEST PROVEN threat in Hobbs, Merrill, Gunn, Brandon Hassell, Cory Rodgers, Michael DePriest, and Reggie Harrell. I think Gunn really makes TCU lethal this year on offense-better than ever before. How is SMU going to stop that group. Now I like the potential of Munlin, Phillips, Lowery and some others but they still go into the unproven category in comparison to TCU's 7 weapons.

In typical Stallion fashion you have presented your caveat in your "BEST PROVEN" choice of words. So now if we wind up beating TCU you can back pedal a bit...very smart. Maybe last year was just an anomalie, but they didn't exactly run over us last year...in fact, they were damn glad that game ended when it did and they were able to leave with a "W". The game last night showed that their defense has some big holes in it and if... (yes, this is my caveat)... and if our offense can get the new system running well, and if our defense is indeed improved over last year, we will have a very good chance to beat that purple hoard. Only playing the game will tell. You may not think much of my rose colored glasses, but I'm sure as hell glad I'm not stuck with your myopic blinders.

Ahhh, I see you have expanded your caveat with that last sentence since I started typing this reply. Hmmm......

I agree we're unproven. However, Northwestern does run a spread offense like us. Munlin should get yardage against the Frogs on draw plays which Northwestern clearly got. Phillips while raw is more of a running threat than the Northwestern QB and if flushed out could get some big gains. And clearly passes were open if we can catch them. We'll see how good or bad the defense is vs. Tech. If we can hold Tech this week below 28, I think the game against the Frogs could be a barn burner.

5 years ago on this board I predicted at least of 5 game winning streak by TCU over SMU just based on the talent discrepancy alone. The talent discrepancy is still there especially on offense where it maybe greater-and any analyst that wasn't a HOMER would tell you exactly that. I'll admit the gap is narrowing somewhat across the field but if you can't recognize the talent TCU has on offense-which is the point I was making- then you are the one with the perception problem. As for holding Tech under 28-we got them at home with a new QB but you know Tech as been held to 28 points or less only a couple of times in the last two years and has averaged in the mid 40s against Big 12 competition so that goes down as a BIG "IF".

Nothing wrong with being a HOMER...that's what fans are suppose to be. Every team needs someone who believes in them. The more there are the more the team will believe in themselves. That is half the battle.

As far as TCU's talent level is concerned, they obviously have some on offense, but based upon the score last night evidently so does Northwestern...or as I said last night neither one of them has a defense worth crowing about. Let's let the games be played and see what we have and what they have rather than condeming our team to the gutter before they even hit the field. Who knows, we might even have to find some crow for Stallion to chew on...well I can dream can't I???

I do feel for the NW kicker, but if he gets his shanks straightened out, then NW puts up 60 (count 'em - 60!) points on the little froggies. In FW. Every team has kinks to work out, but that defense ain't the same as it was last year. They lost a ton of talent, especially on the front line. They're still going to be good, and we'll have to play reeeeeeally well to beat them. Let's hope they're spending all their time between now and next week getting ready for Tech.

And Red Raiders, here's hoping you re-write the record book on the 18th.
