Beachum wins prestigious "M" Award

Postby PonyPride » Tue Apr 12, 2011 11:14 pm

SMU left tackle Kelvin Beachum, Jr., was named one of 10 recipients of the 2011 "M" Award Monday night.

The "M" Award is the most highly prized recognition bestowed upon students, faculty, staff and administrators on the SMU Campus. The recipients' efforts have been continuous during their years at the University and are not limited to a narrow vested interest. The "M" Award honorees are an inspiration to others, giving unselfishly of their time and talents in order to make the University, and indeed the world, a better place for all of us to live.

Congrats to Beach. He's done a great job, kept his priorities in line and acted as a true Mustang should since he's been here.

He deserves this.

That is some nice praise. The young man called me as part of the outreach to Mustang Club members last fall. It was just after the ecu game, so I was still in the clouds. We chatted for a while. He was a very well spoken person. Glad he is on our team. Go Ponies!

Great! Now tell me again why SMU needs to lower their academic standards and admission requirements? Texas is brimming with "Beachums" who are winners on and off the field. We need more positive stories like this instead of why we should make academic exceptions for guys who think they are here to only play football!

And all the wannabees should value the opportunity enough to get their butts to class. I've spent a lot of years in the college classroom on both sides of the lecturn and it is very, very hard to fail a student who comes to class, asks for help, and tries. Not to take anything away from Beach, who is a great guy and makes good choices. Wish we had more like him.

Congrats Kelvin! I'm honored to have you join our little group. Have other football players won this award before?

(I have mine on my bookshelf at work.)

Best way to win the faculty over is having our kids perform in the classroom. Even if the athlete can only maintain a 2.5 average, try! Go to class, do the homework, appear interested and ask for help when needed.s Hooray for Beachum!
