very late report on A&M's spring game...

Postby peruna81 » Wed Apr 20, 2011 7:05 pm

10-12K in attendance...

QBs were sporadic, hit some big plays, but see below on DBs...Tannehill could be a problem, as he is fairly accurate, and didn't become a turnover machine last year.

OLine is a big questionmark for the Aggies...they are young and talented, but haven't jelled in current configurations...they have shifted around a bunch of folks (per an Aggie friend), and still haven't got this part up to speed. SMU could get pressure on QB.

Receivers were big, and fast...had a few drops, but were very capable of hitting big plays, and breaking tackles. On several throws the receiver had separation, and the QB didn't get the ball there. Fair mix of fades and crossing routes...fairly simple routes shown.

RBs are beasts...this may be where we get beat up and beat down again. Aggies had decent fills with the LBs in holes, and the RBs would still move/break the man. Same story as years before with our defense, if the run can be stopped, we could be in the game...BIG if.

DL and LB were solid...restrictions on the defensive schemes in the spring game, but still able to get pressure on the QB, and force play termination. With Vaughn Miller's departure there should have been a lag here, but several redshirts and sophs were MOVING when they covered backs out of the backfield...they may just be reloading rather than rebuilding.

DBs were a NIGHTMARE situation...this could be a great area advantage for SMU if, IF we can hold onto the ball...there were 3 out of 4 starters out, so most of the time was given to new players and trying several folks out that were changing position. These guys could not keep up with the reserve WRs, much less the starters. Coaches were working this area with headlong abandon during the scrimmage...DeRuyter, the DCoordinator will have plenty to work on during the off-season if this area will meet up with the rest of the defense

Left before festivities were over, but an enjoyable day seeing college football, and receiving the occasional heckle from folks that knew we were the first game, or from 50 year olds that remember the SWC...ate slovacek sausage...not bad...
