Former SMU — and current Pittsburgh Steelers — wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders was back at Gerald J. Ford Stadium Monday, sporting a walking boot on his left foot, which is not the one he broke during Super Bowl XLV.
Following the NFL's ultimate game, in which he broke the fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot, Sanders had a screw implanted in the bone to accelerate healing. The second surgery, he said, was designed to prevent a similar injury in his other foot.
Sanders said that while his foot heals, of course, he is limited to upper body workouts only. He expects to be cleared to resume running and working on football drills in "about six weeks." He added that during the NFL lockout of its players, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger plans to coordinate unofficial workouts. Sanders won't be able to do much, other than catch balls thrown directly to him, but he plans to attend the workouts with his teammates.
