Re: SMU Football and Basketball APR Scores DisconcertingFor anyone to truly believe in the NCAA and give credibility to any of its reports/studies/enforcement tactics/rules and regulations either personifies the phrase, "ignorance is bliss" or really is a damn fool.
Screw the NCAA and EVERYTHING it stands for. It is the most vile, corrupt organization. Its hyprocrisy knows no limits.
Re: SMU Football and Basketball APR Scores Disconcerting
I must respectfully disagree. I don't believe the NCAA holds a candle to vile and corrupt organizations like the IRS or our Congress. We do not fear the NCAA, just hold it in contempt. But Roosevelt said it best in the dark days of the depression when he said, "The only thing we have to fear, is our government itself!' PS I can ‘t wait to see folks go ballistic over this post ![]()

BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

Mitch: I couldn't agree more about the NCAA. They might be the root of all evil. However, I am sure that these numbers were just pushed along from the self reporting the school does. The NCAA sets up its rules to benefit the massive revenue engines. All of those revenue generators have enough crap majors to get any knucklehead through. Our problem is that we are actually a school that wants to educate our players. I know, I know... it's just crazy. These standards are a PR move from the NCAA that costs them nothing. It is actually a benefit if it stops upstarts like us or TCUseless from hampering the cash cows. Stallion: We don't need to "get around these rules". We need to find a way to bolster the resources our athletes have at their disposal to make this a non issue. "Getting around the rules" makes us sound like Florida State (where they have to cheat to pass open book, online classes). Some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall
Re: SMU Football and Basketball APR Scores DisconcertingThe NCAA does NOT need to play any role in any college/university's curriculum or what requirements need to be fulfilled. IMO, that's pure SOCIALISM.
The clearinghouse is one thing. And that isn't an absolute either because there are some universities (i.e. Stanford) which don't even recognize those minimums. But when that student-athlete gets on campus, it's none of the NCAA's business how it should go down. That's a decision made by the university or university-system only.
Re: SMU Football and Basketball APR Scores DisconcertingA whole lot of crazy people making irresponsible comments on this thread-but that's the SMU way! BTW I never said anything like "SMU needs to figure out ways to get around the rules". I believe in minimum NCAA standards and Academic Progress Toward Degree standards. How can you blame the NCAA for the individual institution's skirting the rules. I'll admit though that the NCAA hasn't yet found a way to keep the SCHOOLS themselves from getting around the rules-but generally the NCAA has been marching in the right direction for decades with the exception of the retreat on minimum SAT/ACT scores. Next step is to examine the curiculum and concentration of majors.

I could be more original. Lol
Re: SMU Football and Basketball APR Scores Disconcerting
You need to explain yourself here. Are you telling us that you want the NCAA to lay down exactly everything that should go into communications, business, history, political science, etc. degrees when every university has a different means for students to reach them? Are you also suggesting that they should be meeting a certain number of hours when College A's hours requirement could differ from College B? The NCAA has no right to determine or place benchmarks what any individual college/university curriculum and concentration of majors should be. That should remain with any individual school. Once that student-athlete is on a particular campus, he or she is to meet the requirements that school has laid out to remain eligible, pursue the major and graduate. If you're really suggesting that, then everybody should just go to the same school and take the same classes. THAT IS SOCIALISM!
Re: SMU Football and Basketball APR Scores DisconcertingWhat is wrong with you. Calm the hell down. Its is common practice in education to have school's academic programs audited and monitored for academic integrity if the school wants to be certified by various regulatory and oversight groups. Every law school and medical school has to be certified. Big 10 schools have to be certified if they want to be a member of the that academic consortium-the AAU. This is very common practice throughout academia. The NCAA already requires all schools to make an report every 7 years regarding academic and institutional integrity to be certified by the NCAA. I think at a minimum the NCAA should start recommending that school's that concentrate athletes in certain curiculum and majors are not in compliance with the rules of the NCAA that student/athletes must meet the same general academic requirements as the student body at large.

Re: SMU Football and Basketball APR Scores Disconcerting
Technically, medical schools need to be accredited, not certified, for recognition of its graduates to be eligible for licensing, post graduate training and Board certification eligibility. But I understand the this is a minor distinction to the point you are making. ![]() And yes, I am in my 'know it all' mode today. Re: SMU Football and Basketball APR Scores DisconcertingI accredit you with that clarification.
