I wanted to give all of you a heads-up about something that is going to happen at noon on Friday, September 9th. ALL of the people whose picture appears in our recently released book about the history of SMU Athletics have been invited to return for a giant autograph signing event. I can tell you that it will be in the new ballroom of the Umphrey Lee building around noon. Lunch (sandwiches/salad ) will be available for a nominal amount. If you don't have your book yet you can purchase one at the door or the official announcement will provide a way for you to purchase your book before you arrive.
If you come with your book or purchase one there Heritage Hall will provide you with a free picture that I guarantee you will like.
I know this doesn't provide all of the details but we are working on those right now and will let you know. This could really be a big day for anyone desiring to get autographs from some of SMU's biggest stars -- from all sports -- so please come and we would appreciate it if you would help us get the word out.

I have some classic Laughead photos but apparently Mr. York did not feel I was prominent enough to be included. He concentrated on those Doaks and Kyles, and Hixsons and Hammonds. Pooh.

Save the date of September 9 for a special luncheon on campus celebrating the book, "In Honor of the Mustangs".  The luncheon will take place at the Martha Proctor Mack Grand Ballroom in the Umphrey Lee building.

Many of the athletes highlighted in the book will be on hand for autographs!  More information including online registration information will be coming soon about this exciting event.

This beautiful hardback book, "IN HONOR OF THE MUSTANGS" covers 100 years of SMU Athletics history. The book's twelve chapters comprise over 400 pages, extensively illustrated with over 600 historic photographs, a statistical appendix, timeline, and an index. The book measures 8.75 by 11.5 inches and is suitable for display in homes and businesses.

The book covers the history of all sports on the Hilltop, from well-known championship seasons to the lesser-known but equally important contributions of a host of dedicated athletes and coaches, whose achievements deserve to be recorded and remembered.

Almost everyone knows that Doak Walker was a three-time All American and Heisman Trophy winner, but who knew:

     * SMU fielded a soccer team in 1916.
     * There was a nine-hole golf course on the SMU campus.
     * Willis Tate, a tackle on the 1931 football squad, 
        would become the president of SMU in 1954.
     * Women competed in tennis and basketball at the time
        of SMU's founding.
     * SMU broke the color barrier in the Southwest Conference
        with the recruitment of Jerry LeVias in 1965.

Achievements in swimming, basketball, volleyball, track and field, cross country, tennis, baseball, and equestrian competition receive their due recognition. In fact, in some of these sports, such as swimming, SMU has one of the finest cumulative records in the country. Appealing especially to Mustang fans, the book also looks at athletics in the context of the history of SMU and American higher education in general.
