Read it quickly, because I am going to delete this later this afternoon--it shouldn't belong on a public board, but too many of us have been fooled too long.

mex - mostly hogwash

The moody thing is a total fabrication. RGT has been working on the Moody foundation since before we even won the library.

Not sure where you get your info but you should not post it since you dont really know what you are talking about.

He is not the president of the athletic department - He is the president of SMU - and sometimes that means you have to figure out the balance. JJ is used to Hawaii - one of the lowest bars for academics in the country - he has to adjust also - he is now where academics matter at least somewhat.

Once the acceptence issue and elligibility issues were identified as big problems more money was raised and many more tutors were added so that we can help our players graduate. The process was much improved. There is more to do but they are working on it.

Are there presidents that are more pro-sports? i am sure there are - at schools that are down the list in academic quality.

And we should make no apologies for having a president that gets it on fund raising. He ought to blow right by me to talk to a big donor - i want him to, since i want our school to succeed and that is what it takes to succeed when you are a whopping 6k students competing vs lots of goliaths that get public money and west tx oil money.

you dont have to be a rocket scientist to get what needs to be done here. Turner is doing a good job - Lets not turn on our own.

Mexmustang wrote:"also - the big application increase was this year (after Armed services bowl). There was an increase the prior year but it was much smaller. Also we were not on the Texas common app three years ago - that is a fairly recent change."

The application year that was shown was not 2010-11, but 2009-10. It was the same chart I saw last fall before applications began coming in for this incoming class. I must be in error on the common application, but all four of my SMU students used it. Even if it was being used three classes ago, that doesn't account for a 40-45% jump in the last class (2014).

The Armed Forces Bowl wouldn't have had anything to do with this year's huge increase of applications as early action apps were due in the fall and regular decisions were due by 1/15. Seniors for the most part would have decided where to apply before that game was played.

My daughter was part of this 40% increase and I can tell you that athletics (especially football) played a part in narrowing her choices. Anyone who doesn't think that the possibility of improving teams doesnt have a positive effect on academics is crazy.

Here is a new tradition that I recommend that the school adopt that could help admissions also:

Dwan wrote:not like this is new news.....but for a small private school, if you have a major success in football or basketball.....it can be more successful for academics than anything. See the below tweet from TCU's AD

TCU AD says applications rose from 3k to 22k for 1600 available spots. Football definitely made big impact on school.

TCU has experienced record application rates for 9 of the last 10 years. It didn't begin with the Rose Bowl. No question, however, we got a Rose Bowl boost in 2010.
