Granted, putting a hard schedule together does not make a team better (see UNT) but good recruiting, hard work in the offseason, and good coaching does. Gary Patterson has said for years that they played one stretch game, one even game, and one gimme game per year. And he said this years before they got into the BCS. CMF I do like your OOC idea of "It should be 1 warm-up, 1 easy, 1 challenging, and 1 VERY challenging."

You guys need to man up a little. Our easy games should be Rice, Tulane, Memphis, and maybe UAB. How many more do you need? We are not in the SEC, or even the old MWC. Our conference mates dictate a more difficult non conference schedule if you want to stand out. If and when we get into an AQ conference, I would agree with your scheduling.

Boise State had an easier OOC schedule than us and made it to the BCS with a weaker conference. So did Hawaii. It is a difference between manning up and stupiding up (just messing with you mrydel). But it is what it is and we can't change the schedule.

One thing about it, 2013 is going do one of 3 things:

1. If we go 0-4 OOC it may put Coach Jones unnecessarily on the hotseat.

2. If we go 4-0 OOC we look good nationally

3. If we go o-4 or 1-3 OOC we may not make it to a bowl game.

Should be an interesting year.

You guys just keep lowering that bar and keep hoping we do not get any better. We used to play in the same conference as these other schools and the recruiting was more lopsided than it is now. The UTs, TAMs, TTs, etc. were signing 60+ kids a year and we were signing 25-30 due to the cost. And guess what? We competed with them. Depth would win out against Texas and Arkansas, but we held our own against the rest. We can compete with them. Get a little confidence. I am not blind to reality, but regardless of what you say about CUSA, we need to be, and are positioned to be the top dog. We need to expect to run the table every year. Of course we will not, but the talent should be there for us to do so.

I have never seen such fear of playing good teams on this board. We need to try to accept being good someday. If not why are we playing D1 ball?

I hope we do get better. But I saw the games we played last year and we did not blow out anybody and had to comeback in the 2nd half to beat Tulane. We are better but this year I guess will tell us how much better we are. Mrydel, I think you are blind to reality  .

I'm not discounting their success, but their crown jewel is beating a disinterested Wisconsin team who was maybe the fourth actual best team in the Big 10 last season.

Nice try but go watch JJ Watt's post Rose Bowl interview and tell me that team was disinterested. They wanted that game every but as much as we did. And many people thought (and wrote) that Wisconsin was perhaps the best team in the country at the end of the season. Don't bend the facts to fit your agenda.

Not blind, just living in the present and looking to the future instead of dwelling on last year. I have lived through several stages of SMU football. I am quite aware of what can and cannot be done. If you are going to allow the past to dictate your beliefs, go back to the 1980's for goodness sakes.

We have to know where we are in order to move forward. Maybe you are the one that should go back to the 80's for goodness sakes. At any rate, we'll see what happens this year. That should answer a lot of questions.
