Front Page ESPN...SMU expresses interest in Big 12

I don't know why the Big 12 would want us. They already have the DFW tv market. UT controls the conference. DeLoss Dodds and a prominent UT hack professor/athletic department wannabe couldn't stand our success in the 80s and rejoiced in our downfall. UT already plays one game per year in Dallas and they don't need a game with us for recruiting. Without UT support it won't happen and I just don't see it.

Plus, Jerryworld is its own BCS alternate universe with nationally ranked and/or regionally prominent teams regularly competing against us for the local casual NCAA fan dollar.

Unfortunately, TCU is way ahead of the curve and was wise to go to the Big East. The New York Times sports page one this morning makes it clearer than ever how we fell behind them after we suffered the death penalty and they were handed severe penalties of their own. While we were wringing our hands and writhing in self doubt during the late 80s an 90s, TCU picked themselves up and usurped our place as the dominant D1 program in this area.

Whether TCU made a wise decision or not remains to be seen.
I don't blame them one bit for going, but if TCU were not going to the Big East, I guarantee you their name would be on ESPN and elsewhere as a leading candidate to replace A&M, possibly the only candidate if they are looking for a Texas school, and the BE is not, repeat NOT, the Big XII, even without A&M. I'm not saying that either us or Houston are going, but if any Texas school ends up getting that spot then TCU will be kicking themselves - I don't care what their fans say outloud.

You are probably right, but I think of TCU going to the Big East in much the same way I think of the Cowboys playing in the NFC east. Great inter-regional rivalries might spring up with the full attention of the Eastern media. TCU is getting lots of good press in those huge media markets and will be a household name up there within a year. SMU became a national power when we had those big games with ND, Ohio State and Georgia Tech back in the 40s and 50s. I think TCU sees similar opportunity in travelling north.

Plus TC-who has a much better opportunity for success in the BE than they would in b12.
