Great article, and sums it up pretty nicely. Looks like there is a power struggle brewing between the UT Admin (which realize the benefit of being in a BCS conference, and a big dog in it) and DeLoss Dodds (whose ego trumps his common sense at least 8 out of 10 times). Yet still no mention of SMU being considered for membership (San Diego State, really?)

But if this keeps up, how long is it before Texas becomes the most hated school in America?

Hasn't Texas already obtained that status?

Yes in my eyes. Close third to ND and Miami nationally I would say.

Close, but not yet (to me, at least).

1. Notre Dame - always
2. Houston - I have 95 reasons to hate them
3. Penn State - JUST RETIRE, DAMMIT
4. Baylor - a fake punt isn't the only thing that should be thrown at Grant "The Fraud" Taeff
5. Texas - their fans' sense of entitlement is absolutely nauseating ... I'd give anything to see them somehow screw themselves on this deal.

Okay- partially agree. Here's my list.

1.Texas- your reasons plus I remember that a-hole Freddie Akers- he did all he could to bring us down.
2. Houston - same reason as yours. I hope Jack Pardee burns in hell.
3. A&M- Jackie Sherrill was as big a scum-bag as Akers if not worse. Did all he could to ruin SMU.
4. Baylor - same reason as yours
5. Notre Dame - because they are almost as arrogant as the whorens
5A. Michigan - because I grew up in Ohio and the buckeyes are my second favorite after SMU.

I think that given the problems with the state's education budget, that UT's administration is worried that if A&M publicly demonstrates that it has $30.0MM or so to exit the Big 12, and Texas has $150.0MM revenue in its athletic budget, that someone in government is going to ask the obvious two questions: Why do we annually increase the state's $100's of million of dollars of state subsidies to two state universities whose sports spending has gotten so out of hand, can't they give back to the general operating fund of the school?; and second, How much income is leaving the state by schools leaving for other conferences and not including local schools such as U of H ( a state university), TCU, and SMU that would keep games and revenues in the State of Texas?

Mexm- I think you give the politicians far too much credit. They would never think of asking the 'hard' quesitons let alone do something about it.

That's an honest, and probably accurate, article, and I guarantee you that writer has taken grief for writing it - critizing UT in Austin is never going to be popular, and that journalist has balls.

The bottom line is this:
UT wants both to the major money earner in a major conference and have it's network. That could've happened if they had been smarter, or maybe more subtle. But they weren't, and everybody in the conference, maybe even country, is lining up against Texas.
The LHN is simply not set up to replace a conference. This article pointed out the Big XII is going to pay UT around 20M this year. The LHN is only good for 12M - that's not even close. The LHN doesn't provide a place for olympic sports, doesn't offer a chance at a BCS bowl for a 9-3 or even 8-4 conference champ, doesn't provide a chance at the NCAA tourney for basketball, and it doesn't bring the athletic, academic, political, and financial leverage that a BCS conference does. The Horns have to be in a conference, otherwise they could stand to lose upwards of 20M/year. I don't care who you are, that's alot of money.
But those of you that have said UT wants to go indy - this article does a good job spelling out why that's simply not true.
