You can win big with scrubs at QB when you have a defense and running game to lean on. Even before Dalton morphed into a NFL caliber QB as a senior he won 11 games as a sophomore and 12 as a junior. We don't have that luxury with Jones in charge, he needs a Colt Brennan at QB for his teams to win big.

Dalton definitely improved his draft stock a ton his junior and senior years. I would say his growth as a QB over the course of his senior year improved his draft status quite a bit from the beginning. As was previously mentioned, he always had a good W-L record, but that was in large part due to a great defense and running game.

I guess Patterson gets a +1 for developing a QB just because he is the head coach and is in charge of the program and assistant coaches. He is not working with offense, developing QBs or calling offensive plays though. His involvement in the offense is little more than 4th down decision making. The offensive coaches and Dalton get the credit for his improvement. It seems more apt to fault Coach Jones for lack of QB development rather than to applaud Patterson specifically.

In the A&M game, I don't think it was so much he didn't make the reads. He flat out failed to execute. The second pick was horribly overthrown. He had DJ wide open and just missed him. It was a replay of the Army game.

That being said, I think June either needs to let him work though these issues or give Kaiser or Preston a shot. We have to build toward the future and J.J. Is not the future.

I think JJ is doing just fine as a coach based upon his knowledge...maybe this QB situation will make them BOTH better....there is nothing wrong with alternating. I for one, hope they both step their respective games up because of the intense competition, and at the end of the season we WIN another bowl game and Kyle has gotten his head right in game time situations so he kicks booty his senior season and at that time we have several understudy's that will be ready in 2013.
Forget about NFL prospects and NFL scouts, who in the heck cares about Dalton anyway?.....lets just get SMU winning. 7-7 doesn't cut it anymore. Quit whining about years past, we have the talent and coaching at SMU now that SHOULD get us to the next level.

It sure is fun being an armchair QB but it all comes down to this....Why pay a guy and/or his coaches $2,000,000 to come to SMU and think he would do anything less than his best to win games? Anybody offered you any money to come give your opinion and coach anywhere? I didn't think so. He is there every practice and meeting so surely he knows just a little more than us. On the other hand dementia seems to hit some people at an earlier age than others. Remember all the frog faithful who were calling for Dalton at TCU to be removed from starting because of some int's in the first few years. Rememer the campus reporter who was fired because he stated Pachpall(?) was going to beat him out his fr year! He seemed to turn out pretty good and those frog fans sure have short memries. How that kid did what he did playing for a psycho like Patterson is amazing.
