Rice and Tulane

Postby smupony94 » Wed Sep 21, 2011 3:57 pm

Over the years I have heard that SMU Presidents have wanted us to remain in conferences with Rice and Tulane. I think Turner has said this too.

Has he changed his position on this matter?

Did you know Tulane was in the SEC back in the 60's?

Yes. so was GT. They left to indy in football and joined the metro athletic conference in all other sports.

I don't specifically recall Turner talking about it (not to say that he didn't), but you are correct that SMU has in the past definitely sought to align itself with private schools that have a similar profile (specifically Rice and Tulane). I haven't heard anyone at SMU toe that line in awhile though. Orsini, with the support of Turner and the Board, has put a much more ambitious athletic agenda in place.

I think one big thing that has attracted SMU to Rice and Tulane is the fact that both schools are AAU. I haven't actually heard anyone at SMU talk about it, but it wouldn't surprise me if SMU is trying to obtain AAU admission. I don't know if that's realistic or what the timeframe would be, but that would be a huge coup for SMU as an institution.

Who knows, maybe it was always his version of "coach speak." I mean, we've been with Rice for 90 years and have played Tulane over 20 mines, maybe it's like June talking about NWSU last Tuesday.

Tulane was the 1934 SEC Champion. They all also used to play in Tulane Stadium that was filled with 80,000 until they left the SEC in the 70's.
